      Status Update 26 Jan 2022

👋 Hi - I’m a Divya Sriram, a Product Manager that works on the editor team. I recognize that it's been a while since you've heard from the team, so I'm here with the update we owe you.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. As we continue to improve the editing experience, it's important to understand use cases like this. This feature is not in our short-term roadmap, but we will work to see if it makes sense if to move this feature into our future roadmaps.

We will keep you updated along the way.

      Thank you,
      Divya

NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Cloud. Using Confluence Server? See the corresponding suggestion.

Would like the ability to display numbered, formatted headers. Same test style as existing headers (h1., h2., etc), but with dot-notation nested numbering.

      Maybe something like: h#., h##., h###., etc.

      So markup like:
      h#. One
      h##. One-one
      h##. One-two
      h#. Two
      h##. Two-one
      h###. Two-one-one

would display as if markup was entered:

      1. One

      1.1 One-one

      1.2 One-two

      2. Two

      2.1 Two-one

      2.1.1 Two-one-one

Notice that the heading levels start at h2 since h1 is really too big for this usage.

Atlassian Status as of June 27, 2019

      Hi All,

Thank you for your feedback on this issue thus far. We acknowledge that many teams require numbered headings for many cases ranging from specifications to the legal profession.
At present, this issue is not on our short term roadmap.
Please consider one of the many add-ons in the marketplace which provide this functionality:

      Cloud and Server

      Server only

Many users have indicated that they need flexibility in the way this feature should work for them. Please do comment to let us and our add-on vendors know if these add-ons do not provide the functionality which you need.

            [CONFCLOUD-1732] Numbered Headings

wtf Atlassian, this must be a joke. This most basic feature request on earth is over 20 years old?

            Workaround for anyone interested: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/71749474/how-can-i-get-automatically-numbered-headings-in-confluence

d8dee66972a4 no one wants another third party app for this. This should be a CORE functionality of any wiki tool there is on the whole world.

Atlassian should just be honest and close this issue with a "**** you, we don't care about customer needs" - resolution.

            This is just stupid.

We wanted a numbered heading solution that automatically update whenever you re-publish a page (other apps do not) so we built Numbered Headings by Easy Apps (cloud only).

On the roadmap bulk numbered headings (choose multiple pages on a space to add the same formatting).

Feel free to send me feature requests stavros@easyapps.app.

How.......in 2023 is it acceptable not to have numbered headings as standard? While we all waited, ClickUp deployed an entire product, and are rapidly catching. Even Microsoft Office 365 have released things that are starting to make me question why we're still using Confluence for documentation (latest thing is Loop) and meeting notes/actions.

Add-ins are great for enhancing functionality, but not basic formatting of content.

You were a great company and developer tool once upon a time.....I remember those days fondly, but every year we consider alternatives. If it weren't for Jira, I wouldn't give Confluence a second glance.

On the other side of the argument - Mod makers tend to fix their bugs.. If Attlassian do implement this, it will only work on Tuesdays and only allow you to use numbers you typed recently in another page and those bugs will sit for 25 years with no action... because they willl claim it is a feature of a new and improved (and less capable) editor

@Jo Wilkes if there is is a anniversary celebration on your "short term roadmap" please let me know, I will join.
The only ciritical aspect is that the 25th-anniversary celebration will happen in 2054 as it takes at Atlassian at least 25 years to implement customers feedback

2004. This issue was raised in 2004.

Will there be an anniversary celebration in 2029? Maybe with a public "We'll revisit whether we could implement this basic feature one day" statement?
