It would really be nice if Attachments would go to the Trash when the are removed instead of actually being deleted.

We like to give our users as much control over Confluence as possible, but the fact that we would have to restore an inadvertently deleted attachment from backup means that we cannot grant the right to remove attachments in the same way that we can grant the right to remove pages. As a workaround we create a "Trash" page in each space that attachments can be moved to for eventual deletion, but this is an unintuituve kludge.

      Thanks!

[CONFSERVER-6821] Put Removed Attachments Into The Trash

I'm using Confluence 6.13.8. I just noticed today that when deleting a version of an attachment, that is older than the current version, it does not end up in the space trash. Attachments only go to the trash when deleting from the top level (i.e. the non expanded attachment entry). Has anybody else noticed that? I couldn't find an existing issue about it. Also, if you delete all versions of the attachment, the attachment is gone and also not in the space trash.

Thanks, Niraj. Good to hear. It's only been 3183 days since I submitted this request, so I'm glad it was never forgotten.

Thanks, everyone, for your patience with this issue. We're pleased to let you all know that as of the upcoming Confluence 5.8 release, when attachments are deleted, they will appear in the space's trash and can be restored by administrators of that space. This behaviour is in line with how pages behave when deleted.

For Server customers, 5.8 is due out within a couple of months. Cloud customers - this little gift might be coming your way a little sooner!

If you'd like to try it out in the mean time, you can try the beta version of 5.8 here. Note that we're still ironing out some kinks around the trashed attachments feature so it might not be perfect yet.

            @andy11

I just tried the Attachment Recycler, it can only recreate the file in terms of adding it to the attachment list as a new document but can not put it back into the 'timeline'.

But it is working - and right now it is a patch that at least helps out - hence I'll buy it for my own instance but also recommend it for all instances I know about.

@Atlassian: Sorry, still in duty to modernize from my point of view. See CONF-37322.

I allowed myself to open an Improvement issue regarding Backup & Restore (see CONF-37322) since I feel that just fixing one thing isn't leading into a trustworthy solution but into patchwork - which I would not like to see if it comes to crucial nuts and bolts.

@andy11 Obviously not. And yes, the pricing for all numbers of users seem to be fair. I'll give it a try and see how it works.

But @atlassian - this doesn't get you of duty - it may buy you some time

Have you seen Attachment Recycler, it provide a get out of jail free for attachment deletion, providing restoration (latest version only). 10$ for 10 users, seems fair

agreed with everything Ingo-Stefan Schilling said above.

From my point of view, the whole attachment handling as well as the whole backup & restore concepts have to be modernized asap.

In a modern world where time seems to be the most crucial resource, it cannot not be that

            1. things, especially attachments, can be so easily deleted
            2. versions can not be deleted by version
            3. no warning appears
            4. restoring of a single attachment is so complicated

Aside the fact that Atlassian as manufacturer is from my point of view in duty to provide a real solution instead of the provided fig leaf, I wonder why no-one by now created a working plug-in... I would be happy to pay 'a little fortune' for such a thing since the costs I know about in diverse projects for restoring single files are high enough to justify this ... however, I would be happy if a ten user version wouldn't be at the costs of 'a little fortune'... but that's another story

this is especially funny if you consider their announcement for the new version for files to be first class citizens in confluence.. heh
