      A customer has expressed an interest in having a "Reply" button for comments to save them manually having to quote the content themselves. They suggested the following:

      "What I need is when replying to a previous comment by someone else to be able to start with a quoted copy of his/her text. Say someone said

      I believe that's bug XYZ, right?

      I want to hit a button "Reply quoted" or something that puts

      {quote}
      I believe that's bug XYZ, right?
      {quote}

      into the text field where I start typing my reply similar to what "Reply" does in Bugzilla and what JRA-6412 is asking for JIRA."

            This feature is implemented in Confluence 5.4.

            You can now select the text you want to quote in comment and click on the 'quote in comment' icon:

            The comment editor will appear with the quoted text already populated:

            This feature is available both when you want to quote something from a page or from a comment.

            This would be immensely useful and is a common feature on many popular forum platforms.

            Quite disappointed to see that this feature currently has only 2 votes. For collaboration software a feature like this should be present and implemented in the best possible way. In our company this limitation is a huge pain point in our lengthy comment discussions. We copy/paste the previous comment or page content into the comment text field and manually mark it as quote. Also breaking the quote to comment inline is difficult, as pressing enter does not break the quote. So we have to again manually unquote and type in the reply to a piece in the original quoted text (ouch). We deliberately moved away from email (which has great quoting abilities) to Confluence for our technical discussions, but everyone in our team is complaining about the lack of proper and easy quoting capabilities.

            Gmail has a great implementation (with addition of the "Quote selected text" feature of Gmail Labs):

            • Selecting text and hitting reply will quote that text and put the cursor under it. It would be great if this would also work when selecting text in the page and not just from the comments
            • Hitting reply without selecting text will quote the whole original text and place the cursor above it. For Confluence it's probably better to put the cursor below the quoted text as Gmail case (email) is different in this regard.
            • When the cursor is somewhere in the quoted text, pressing enter will break the quote and the replier can reply to part of the quote with the rest of the original text still staying in quote under the cursor.
