Export to PDF removes non-Latin Unicode under word and powerpoint macro

NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding bug report.

      Problem Description

In exporting to PDF, some non latin unicode character like Russian character, Chinese character or Turkish character will not be exported properly to pdf (lost), if they are inside viewfile macro. Even though the font is already specified to for example verdana, and verdana.ttf is already uploaded in Confluence Admin >> PDF Export Language Support, the character inside viewfile macro is not exported.

      Steps to reproduce

      1. Include any non unicode character on office document (I use russian in this case)
      2. You can use either word (doc and docx), excel (xls and xlsx), or powerpoint (ppt or pptx) format
      3. Install the font as mentioned in this documentation
      4. Create a page
      5. You can put some non latin character on the editor as well
      6. Attach the document files
      7. Use view file macro to display the attachment in the page
      8. Export to PDF and notice that the nonlatin character in page is exported, but not the one inside viewfile macro

      Workaround

      Export to the Word document

      Note

The Word, Excel and Powerpoint macros have been deprecated in favour of the new file preview macro since 2015. For information on how to replace old view file macros with the new file preview macro, see:

Can please the priority on this issue be raised? Especially for non-Latin symbols directly on the page? We have users world-wide and export to PDF is a usual thing to do. It is important to have it work.
Or is there another issue where i can vote? Thank you.

            Hi everyone

Thanks for your comments on this issue.

Please note that the Word, Excel and Powerpoint macros have been deprecated in favour of the new file preview macro since 2015. For information on how to replace old view file macros with the new file preview macro, see:
            https://confluence.atlassian.com/confkb/how-to-replace-old-view-file-macros-with-the-new-file-preview-macro-720419365.html

I recognise that this is not a direct replacement of the functionality as it only embeds as a thumbnail, not as text. There may be some instances in which this meets your needs and thought it worth mentioning. Further information on displaying files and images can be referenced at: https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/display-files-and-images-245827130.html

At this stage, we will continue to monitor the impact of this issue. I acknowledge that this is frustrating issue but is not rating as highly as others in our backlog, based on its user impact score (UIS). Please continue to add comments that provide further information as to how this affects your workflow and how you use this feature in Confluence, so that this helps us assess its impact.

            Thanks

This issue is still affecting server v7.3.5. Is there any updated on when can this be fixed?

Issue still present in server 6.11.2.

It's not minor - for non English users it's not possible to export document in any way. There's almost no use of Confluence if you can't export documentation for external uses.

This has to be a joke, you people literally make impossible using Confluence for non-english customers. 6th year and still counting.

So is there a fix for Confluence Cloud?

Last comment is from January 2014 and DOC mentioned there seems to be outdated. I cannot see option like PDF Export Language Support, so there is no way to upload my file. There is also no option to export to Word (HTML, XML and PDF only), which I can convert to PDF locally - some comments said Word files had all fonts available, so that could be workaround.

            We use Confluence in cloud.

We like Atlassian tools, but such bugs make our clients to perceive us unprofessional.

            Hi Rian

Thanks for raising this issue. I believe that this is caused by not having the appropriate font for exporting these characters to PDF. This is actually a duplicate of CONF-30779.
https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Creating+PDF+in+Another+Language Describes how to setup exports in such a way that these extended characters will work properly.
