Atlassian Status as of 12th January, 2015

First, I'd like to apologise for not updating the status of this issue earlier. We have decided to close this issue as something we can't see ourselves doing in the foreseeable future, and I wanted to take a moment to explain why.

Confluence has gone on quite a journey since the early days as an enterprise wiki - we're always a little in awe of the many wonderful and varied ways Confluence is used. In the past few months, we've done a lot of soul searching about the future direction of Confluence. We've researched how our customers use Confluence today and identified ways we can better serve all Confluence users. We're determined to improve Confluence as platform for all teams, but have decided to concentrate our efforts specifically on helping teams collaborate on software and IT projects.

Global find and replace can be used in many situations, but we know the main requirement for this feature is for producing and publishing technical documentation. Focusing our development effort on helping software and IT teams collaborate means that this, and other features more typically found in help authoring and publishing tools, won't be making it onto our roadmap. This doesn't mean that Confluence is no longer a great platform for producing documentation and we hope many teams will continue to use Confluence to write and collaborate on their internal and external documentation.

We have a vibrant and growing ecosystem of add-on developers, some of which are already developing fantastic add-ons to extend Confluence for the world of technical documentation. In the spirit of openness and transparency, we wanted to clearly communicate that we won't be implementing global find and replace in the foreseeable future and are happy to offer up this feature for vendors in our ecosystem to implement. We have already begin working with some vendors to see what can be done in this space.

      Cheers,
      Sherif Mansour

Yeah, Confluence's target group turned out to be development teams who want to take internal notes. We also tried Confluence for large sets of customer-facing doc for a while: For that, we bought plugins from the Marketplace (kudos to k15t) and our developers wrote custom plugins (e.g. for search&replace and product name variables).

As a caveat, if you go the custom plugin route (Java is slightly more elegant than hacking the database) , or use third-party plugins from more than one company, you'll need to verify their compatibility yourself before each server update.

We switched to DITA XML a few years ago, and our new CMS-that-shall-not-be-named avoids some of Confluence's weaknesses and brings a different weakness of its own. Oh well, we won't get bored soon.

I used to work with Author-it around 2010, the desktop editor had proper features. We did have to write post-processing scripts, and it didn't scale up in the long term, but since you are not likely lugging around decades of gigantic legacy doc sets, it might work for you.

This ticket was created 15 years ago and "resolved" more than 5 years back. I guess we have reached the point "beyond the foreseeable" future already.

Can someone watching this topic recommend any good and feasible solution that doesn't involve hacking the database - or a suitable replacement for good technical online documentation? This tool seems not to be it.

I'm at a serious loss for words describing this product policy.

Keeping Wiki docs up to date is crucial, a find replace per page or globally would be great

Interesting statement from Atlassian. Is it that hard to implement. It is obvious that this is feature is needed. I don't understated your excuse for not doing this. Sure, lets search for a third party expensive plugin, that always seems to be the answer.

I second that - 2020 and we don't have search/find and replace - it is basic.... our customers cannot update their pages in bulk and has to go one by one.... some customers has over 200-300 pages...

It's 2020 and we have yet to see a sufficient solution either by Atlassian or the Marketplace to what is an essential function in a huge content system. The last Addon (Search and Replace by Rumpelcoders) is 3 years old and thus unsupported - so much for "vibrant and growing ecosystem of add-on developers". I have reached out for months to various developers for alternatives, none of which showing interest to tackle this subject. The fact that this request has 179 votes and was just closed tells me that I need to abstain to recommend Atlassian's Confluence to any serious Technical Writer in the near future.

An update on this subject would be HIGHLY appreciated.
