Use modifiers email as from address in email notifications

    • We collect Confluence feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

      Current Situation
One defined email address has to be configured as "From Address" when sending email notifications (on Admin Console -> Mailserver). All notification emails are sent from this address. When recipient "blindly" replies to this email, it is sent to the defined address rather than to the modifier causing the notfication to be sent.

      Desired Situation
On general Mailserver configuration, the variable ${email} is available for "From Address", just as it is available for "From Name":
      http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Configuring+a+Server+for+Outgoing+Mail
Meaning: Emails should be sent from the address of the modifier. In this case, the recpient will directly contact the modifier when replying to the notification email.

            Guilherme,
There seems to be 2 situations going on here. The ticket above is stating that the reply to the shared emails goes back to the defined email address in the Mail Settings "from" address. I currently have ours setup with "noreply@uline.com". When I reply to a shared item in Lotus or Gmail, +it actually goes back to the recipient +and not the noreply - see green highlight in attachment. Users on this ticket should recheck the functionality now that it has been a few years

My issue is, outgoing items can't be tracked from our monitoring program. The program picks up the plain text (noreply@uline.com) in the "From address" field as the outbound sender.

I am requesting an enhancement to the field "From Address" in Mail Server settings to allow variables like "From name = $

            {email}

. See yellow highlight in attachment.

Our IT security can't track outbound emails when everything is noreply@xxxxxxx.com or whatever we send it to. If this was a variable field, we could then pull the ${email} and address this properly.

What do we need to do to get this enhancement request put though? At least make this an optional setting.
            Thanks,
            Jon

OK, CONF-5002 is an altogether different thing (should one create a new page comment just to say "Thanks!"?? Or to add a personal remark, because believe it or not, those things still happen ). It is NOT a solution. I am getting tired of forwarding emails to the right users day in day out, because they think they are writing to other users while they are writing to Confluence admins. And btw the potential for embarrassing mistakes is also high. Just imagine!!

Won't you do something about this, Atlassian? The ideal solution should be configurable by groups, as I understand why you wouldn't want to expose real email addresses to self-registered external users (for those like us who have them).

            Cheers

Same here, what is the wont fix explanation? This is a very valid feature request!
And no, it has nothing to do with CONF-5002, please re read!

Why won't this be fixed? The "Resolution" above states "Won't Fix". We need to be able to reply to notification emails about changes. This seems simple enough and would be an incredible time saver for us. When someone modifies a page I would like to be able to reply to the email to the user stating my opinion. Right now I cannot do so since the "From Address" field on the Mail Servers configuration page does not accept the variable ${email}. I am forced to put a useless email address in that field instead.

            Hi Sherif,

I am afraid there's some misunderstanding: Either on your side or on mine...

I don't see issue CONF-5002 having to do anyhting with this one. CONF-5002 seems to be about adding content to Confluence via email. I don't see why such a feature would deal with the way notifications are sent. And this is what this issue at hand is about: I don't want to answer "online" to some comment. I want to be able to reply only to the person having modified the content. Thus, I want to sent an email which does not end being another comment on the page.

Thus, from my point of view, the two issues are not related in the way you seem to be suggesting.

            Cheers
            Michael

This problem would really be solved by CONF-5002 and is already captured in CONF-10543
