As it's possible to see under "Manage product sandboxes", if your production environment is downgraded to a Standard or Free plan, your sandbox will be deleted.

Unfortunately, no error messages or emails are sent to the customers with that information clearly stating this. You should be able to see the following under your Org > Security > Audit Logs:

Improve the communication either through the Org Panel or through email.
