Problem Definition
When an email address receives an invitation spam email from one of our Cloud sites, the recipient does not have a clear means to report this abuse to Atlassian. As a result they are most likely to just click a 'report spam' button in their email client.
While that report spam option might help them to avoid further spam from that particular site, the consequences to Atlassian are far worse in that this damages our reputation; both in the minds of individual spam victims and in the view of RBLs that actively block IP addresses we use to send that email (and other legitimate email) based on those spam reports.
At the present time, we rely on the good will of those spam victims to create an account with us, and then hope that they will report it to us through one of our contact channels, (community, support, etc).
Suggested Solution
We need to do more to make it easier for people to report spam to us:
- Notifications for invitations to join a site should have a link within them to report the sending site/user for abuse to Atlassian.
It would also be nice (but maybe is outside the scope of this request)
- The Contact Us page should have a Report Abuse section to capture this info
- It would also be helpful if each particular Atlassian Cloud site could have an option for users to report it for abuse.
Why this is important
People that get spam from our services often don't already have an account with us. That leaves them with very limited options for reporting spam abuse to us. It's imperative that we quickly identify Atlassian Cloud sites that are abusing our terms of service and deactivate them promptly
Workaround
- At the present the only options to report abuse are
- Forward abuse emails directly to abuse@atlassian.com
- Create an Atlassian account and use that to post to https://community.atlassian.com
