If during the Bitbucket Server installer wizard an incorrect setting is configured (for example, wrong installation or data directory selected), or if someone just wants to stop using Bitbucket Server for whatever reason, there should be documentation explaining the changes the installer makes, and how to reset to a clean state. See the original description below for some of the elements that should be covered.
Original suggestion:
If during the Bitbucket Server installer wizard an incorrect setting is configured (for example, wrong installation or data directory selected), or if someone just wants to stop using Bitbucket Server for whatever reason, there should be an uninstaller to facilitate the process.
The uninstaller should:
- Check if the instance is still running and ask the user to confirm they want to stop it
- Delete the installation directory
- Ask if the data directory should also be deleted
- Ask if the database schema should also be dropped, if using an external database
- Delete the dedicated system user atlbitbucket that gets created when the product is installed as service, or at least offer an option to do so.
Workaround
Refer to the How to Uninstall Bitbucket Server article covering this topic for Bitbucket Server hosted on a Linux and Windows Server.
