Please add a method that would allow you to clone your repository during build setup but then pass it, along with any other optional paths, to subsequent steps, preventing the need to re-clone the repo for the secondary/etc. steps. This would act similarly to artifacts but wouldn't require upload/download time and could still be ephemeral and tossed during build teardown.
