An external database can be accessed from many bamboo instances. Naturally the DB schema will be updated when an upgrade occurred.
However an older instance of bamboo (with a different bamboo.home) may access the DB accidentally. A tag with the bamboo revision build number should protect the database from being accessed by older versions of bamboo.
