Issue Summary
There is no centralized control for org admins to manage the marketing email preferences for all users; each user must opt out individually. Atlassian Cloud currently sends marketing and promotional emails to new users by default.
Current Challenges:
- User experience: New users receive a high volume of unsolicited promotional emails (product tips, tutorials, event invitations, promotions for other Atlassian products).
- Email filtering: Security solutions (Mimecast, Proofpoint, Microsoft Defender) often block emails from @atlassian.com due to marketing content, causing critical emails (activation links, Jira notifications) to be missed.
- Administrative burden: There is no centralized control for org-admins to manage these email preferences for all users; each user must opt-out individually.
Impact:
- New users may experience frustration or confusion.
- Critical platform notifications may fail to reach users.
- Customers have limited ability to enforce a professional, ad-free environment.
Proposed Solution / Feature Request:
- Provide org-admins with centralized control to disable all non-essential marketing emails by default for new users.
- Allow users to opt-in manually to specific categories of communications if they wish.
- Provide reporting or management tools so org-admins can audit email preferences across their organization.
Workaround
Currently, there is no known workaround for this global control.
Below is the workaround where the users themselves opt out: Marketing emails and invitations
To opt-in or out of marketing emails and invitations:
- Select your avatar in the navigation.
- Select Account settings > Email.
- Select the link, email preferences center.
- Select the emails you want to subscribe to, and deselect those you want to stop receiving.
