Problem statement
Organizations using HRIS synchronization, such as Workday, can have teams created from their HRIS organizational structure in the same Teams directory as manually created teams that are linked to Atlassian groups.
Both team types are presented as Official Teams. Administrators and end users currently have no clear way to determine whether an Official Team was created and managed through HRIS synchronization or is a manually created team linked to a group.
This ambiguity makes it difficult to manage teams at scale and to select the correct team when using a team field in supported Atlassian products.
Customer impact
Customers expects to use Workday-derived teams in production alongside existing Official Teams linked to groups. Without a source indicator, users cannot reliably distinguish the two types in the Teams directory or team picker.
This creates potential for:
• Selecting a group-linked team when an HRIS-managed team was intended
• Confusion over which system is authoritative for membership and team metadata
• Increased administration and audit effort as the number of teams grows
Current behavior
• Workday-generated teams appear as Official Teams.
• User-created teams linked to groups can also appear as Official Teams.
• Both appear in the same Teams directory.
• There is no current visual distinction or filter to identify each team’s creation and management source.
Requested capability
Provide a clear, consistent indication of a team’s source and management type across the Teams directory and team-selection experiences.
At a minimum, customers should be able to identify:
1. HRIS-synced teams, such as Workday-derived teams
2. Group-linked Official Teams
3. Manually managed teams, where applicable
Potential implementation options:
• A source badge or label, for example, “Synced from Workday” or “Linked to Atlassian group”
• A source or management-type field on the team details page
• Directory filters for HRIS-synced, group-linked, and manually managed teams
• Source metadata surfaced in team pickers and team fields
Desired outcome
An administrator or end user can determine, without opening multiple team records or relying on external documentation, whether a selected Official Team is HRIS-managed or group-linked. The indicator should be visible where teams are discovered and selected.
