Add custom field restricting list of users to those in a particular project role

We want to be able to restrict the available assignees to users in a particular project role. We use project roles instead of groups so the project lead can add/drop folks from their projects rather then waiting for the JIRA admin to update groups. Using project roles also reduces the number of groups that need to be maintained.
