      NOTE: This suggestion is for JIRA Cloud. Using JIRA Server? See the corresponding suggestion.

      The several options of a custom field 'Select List' should have icons assigned which are displayed throughout the system rather then the mere text (e.g. in issue navigators).
      They may have the same behaviour like the build in 'Priority' field.
