Since 3.7, some work have been done around I18n.

In the French translation Issue which was translated previously by "Demande" is now translated by "Probleme", which has some effects ...

Previously, we was creating some Issue (Demande) concerning :

  • a Bug (Incident or problème)
  • a New Feature (Nouvelle Fonctionnalité)
  • a Improvment (Amélioration)

Create an Issue (Soumettre une demande) was in with agreement with the functionnality...
Now Create an Issue (Créer un problème) means that we want to create a bug !

"Create an Issue" may be translated by :

  • Soumettre une demande (like before)
  • Soumettre un problème (it may be Restrictive)
  • Soumettre une requête
  • Reporter une requête

Also, Change Log was translated "Journal des modification", which was correct.
Now, it is translated "Modifier Journal" which mean "Modify Log"... which is not the offered fucntionnality !

In all cases, the translation of Issue by Problème is a severe mistranslation ! And will required to review all languages properties files befire any deployment !

Vincent Thoulé added a comment - 04/Jan/07 02:59 AM

I forgot ...

Time Spent was translated Temps Travaillé, which was acceptable.
Now it is translated Temps ecoulé which means Elpased Time.

Correct candidate translation may be :

  • Temps passé (literral translation of Time Spent)
  • Temps consommé (implying the time consumate on estimate)

Original Estimate and Remaining Estimate was translated Estimé Original and Estimé Restant
It was correct ...

  • Estimate and Estimé are both noon
  • Original are Adjectives
  • Remaining and Restant are both participle (Present in UK and Past in FR)

Now they are translated Estimation d'origine and Estimation restante .
In French, Estimation may be translated assessment or valuation.
In JIRA context, Estimate is the result of a assessment or valuation.

What is the reason of so mush mistranslation ???

  • you have changed your translator tools,
  • you have no more staf with rancj knowledge
  • or you applied a language contibution without control !

Mon dieu! C'est une problème!

Vincent Thoulé added a comment - 04/Jan/07 08:24 AM

Hi Neal,

Do not laugh at me.
I really think that is a problem (un problème in French). I am not sure that our users will appreciate the difference.

Cheers
V.

Vincent - I'm not laughing at all! I have a couple of French users, and seeing this mis-translation (sorry for the wrong gender there) is a big issue!

Thanks for the feedback. Creating translations for new JIRA releases has always been a battle. For 3.7, we engaged the services of a translation company. The French translation they provided is what you see in 3.7.1.

I think we will need your help to decide what to do.

Every new translation has a few problems (there were cries of horror when people saw the original German). We could fix the problems as they are noticed, and these will be available at http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/translations.

If, however, the new translation is uniformly and unrecoverably awful, then we can revert all changes to existing translations, and only include their new translations.

So, I'd appreciate it if you could review the translation changes online, and give your opinion as to what we should do. To see the changes in context, I have also put up test JIRA instances for 3.6.5 and 3.7.1.

Cheers,
Jeff

After having navigate in your 3.7.1 Test Project, I confirm that I am horrified by the resulted translation.

I can notice that :

  • News translations have been done only from the original language (UK ) without taking in account existing translations
For exemple in IssueView, Comment on this Issue was translated Commenter cette demande and now translated Faire un commentaire au sujet de ce problème . A such new transation has no interest and have some design effect on the interface, forcing browser to new wrap.
  • Concerning Administration pages, which was never translated, the proposal translation are very ugly, and I have some difficulty to retrieve the wanted page, fortunately I remember the location of them !? For menu section, it may be useful to have english translation in tooltip or the opposite .
  • Concerning the different common concept, it seems clear that your translation company do not have made these translations (at less in French) without having taking in account the more used context.
    • French population having in charge the Administration of soft like JIRA are often Computer specialist and use anglicism.
Ex : Workflow, Trackback, Profiling, Import, Export, ...
    • Terms like Scheme is not easy to be translated in French, but I would never translated by Système.
More close translations may be :
      • Règles (Rules in UK)
      • Plan
      • Stratégie (Policy in UK) It is my prefered !
  • A Permission is the same word in French. Autorisation is just synonymous with it.
  • For Versions ...
UK FR 3.6 FR 3.7.1 Candidates
    Affects Version/s Versions concernées Affecte l'option Version/s Version(s) impactée(s), Concerne la (les) Version(s)
Fix Version/s Versions ciblées Version corrective/s Version(s) corrective(s), Corrigé pour la (les) Version(s)

My personnal opinion would be :

  • To revert to previous Translation,
  • To Add new Translations applying some corrections concerning common concept,
  • And perhaps take in accoutn the Word Warp Effect.

I hope that other customer of JIRA will give their opinion ...

Cheers
Vincent

PS : online is not accessible !
Notice that I do not have lot of time to allow to a such review. I am short in time for a major in-house plugin.

I have rolled it all back for 3.7.2, and will keep everyone in the loop on this issue, if future changes are considered.

Thanks for all your feedback.

Jeff Turner [Atlassian] added a comment - 17/Jan/07 05:00 PM

Marking as 'fixed' for 3.7.2. We are working on an improved QA process, and once this has been implemented and the new translation bugs ironed out, we'll roll the new translation into a 3.7.x release. Again, we shall endeavour to keep everyone informed.

(in the meanwhile, if anyone liked the 3.7.1 French translation and wants to use it in 3.7.2, please let us know and we'll provide it)

David Fischer added a comment - 18/Jan/07 04:09 AM

I just installed 3.7.2 and the French translation has not changed one bit from 3.7.1 (it is still a "problème" ).

David.

Vincent Thoulé added a comment - 18/Jan/07 04:15 AM

David,

Si je ne m'abuse, c'est a priori (si mon anglais est correct) ce qu'annonçait Jeff. Le 'rollback' est prévu pour une 3.7.x (une des prochaines releases, j'espère la 3.7.3).

Vincent

PS: En basculant ton profil sur http://jira.atlassian.com, tu aurais vu tout de suite que ce n'était pas corrigé :

David Fischer added a comment - 18/Jan/07 04:25 AM

Vincent,

(I'm going to reply in English so that everyone can understand)

I'm afraid that's not what Jeff announced. He specifically stated:

  • "I have rolled it all back for 3.7.2"
  • "in the meanwhile, if anyone liked the 3.7.1 French translation and wants to use it in 3.7.2, please let us know and we'll provide it"

This seems to imply that the 3.7.1 French translation was not supposed to be included in 3.7.2.

My understanding is that the "new" (ridiculous) translation is supposed to be rolled out in an upcoming 3.7.x release once it is corrected.

David.

Vincent Thoulé added a comment - 18/Jan/07 04:32 AM

David,

I seems that you are right on two point : I had not well read (perhaps understand his post) , and it is an ridiculous translation (le mot est faible !).

V.

Jeff Turner [Atlassian] added a comment - 18/Jan/07 06:06 PM

Damn; sorry, I rolled it back on the main branch but not for 3.7.2.

Attached to this issue is the rolled-back French language file. Please replace the existing atlassian-jira/WEB-INF/lib/language_fr_FR.jar with it.

Cheers,
Jeff
