The problem is my link above is the open parenthesis, not the close one (see screenshot). It is also in the anchor, not in the path.

Does either of those make a difference?

Yeah Matt this is a bug, it's been raised before (haven't got the jira to hand) the brackets are valid in a URL and yes the javadoc is the classic use of it.
