Description
Problem Definition
The information from Configuring a Server for Outgoing Mail is quite unclear, and it needs to be clarified.
You can personalize email notifications by configuring the 'From' field to include the name and email address of the Confluence user who made the change.
Suggested Solution
There are missing words here. We need to understand there's a difference between the 'From name' and 'From address' fields.
Users see this sentence, and they are lead to believe that it means you can customize the 'From' field to equal that of the user who made the change, and after this change, can therefore simply reply to the email and the message will go to the user who initiated the change. This is not the case here, as the information below this is conflicting:
From Address: Enter the email address that will be displayed in the 'from' field for email messages originating from this server.
This field is mandatory. This must be an ordinary email address, you can't enter variables in this field.
In order to set the 'From' Name and Address fields to the initiator of the change, you would need to use variables, as this changes constantly.
It needs to be more clear that this is a cosmetic change, and the 'From Address' can not be changed in this way due to the fact that it does not accept variables. In the 'From Address' field you can only enter an email address.
Why this is important
Documentation should be clear and easy to follow, and even I had a hard time understanding what it was trying to convey.
