When installing the JDBC jar file it must be installed in:
      <Confluence installation>/lib

I had placed the driver in the originally indicated directory and continued to get the error: could not find driver with class name com.mysql.jdbc.driver

After referring to this page: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Configuring+a+MySQL+Datasource+in+Apache+Tomcat
      it refers to:
Copy the JAR file into the lib folder of your Tomcat installation: <TOMCAT-INSTALLATION>/lib.

Applying this logic, I stopped the Confluence service, copyed the jar to <install>/lib, restarted confluence, no more error and I'm able to proceed with the install.

I am installing Confluence 5.5.6 from ZIP.
(5.6.1 install does not allow external database connection during setup)
