some things that would make the gallery macro better:

the image attached to the page has a comment field. when a comment is provided, it is used as both the caption for the photo in the gallery and for the tooltip that you get when hovering over the photo in the gallery.

but having the filename of the image would also be useful for example when the gallery has 300 images and you want to download the JPG from the attachments.

i'd suggest that the filename be placed into the tooltip regardless of whether the attachment comment is populated.

the gallery macro would benefit from a parameter that controls whether or not captions are shown.

then, if the comment is not populated, the filename be used as the caption. if the comment field is there, it could take precedence over the filename as the caption.

in addition, it would be hugely helpful to be able to link from an image in the gallery. not sure where that would go, except possibly on the comment field of the attachment.

perhaps another gallery macro parameter could control whether the comment field is used for a URL or for a caption. or if you detect a URL in the comment, make that the link for the gallery image rather than assuming we want to see the full size image when clicking.
