After installing Confluence 2.8 on Mac OS X (Leopard) with the installer, i've noticed that when running the Application the "tanukisoftware.wrapper" runs in the dock.
This was also reported to me by Matt Hodges in pre-sales (see attached sceenshot); and after checking this with a developer (Paul) he's said it looks like the wrapper is responsible for executing the new startup and shutdown commands.

This doesn't appear to be an issue for Windows users, as the wrapper will run in the Process List in the Task Manager (though any vigilant sys admin may also question what the wrapper.exe actually is). It would be nice to have this running in headless mode so that this doesn't appear in the dock (or process list); it will surely confuse some users as to what this is.
