Gmail has begun making images safer by proxying them through Google internal servers.

Any Stash instance that is behind a firewall will not be visible to Gmail's servers, and therefore images will show up as broken within Gmail.

      Potential solutions:

      • embed images in the email (adds weight to emails)
      • host images on a public CDN (not feasible for air-gapped customers)

      Workaround

This issue is specifically about Google Gmail not being able to show images when a Stash instance is behind a firewall that Google's servers can't access. This is due to Google implementing an image proxy which means any images shown in Gmail are retrieved through Google's servers.

If you are a Google Apps customer there is an Image URL Proxy Whitelist that can be configured in the Google Apps admin. You (or your Google Apps administrator) can add your Stash server's URL to the whitelist which will mean your browser will talk to Stash directly to retrieve the images, so as long as your browser can access Stash then images should show in Gmail.

We've just tried that - adding URLs of our Atlassian servers to Google Apps white list solved the problem. Thanks for the hint!

msta1, have you tried the workaround mszczepanski outlined above?

I would request that across ALL Atlassian products. We have abandoned out Confluence evaluation, it's simply unusable in it's current state.

Currently we use Lotus Notes, where Atlassian products are broken, but there is a rumor we are going to Google Apps For Business for added security, where it's also broken.

In other words, unless you use Outlook/Exchange, it's broken.

Dear Atlassian, it's 2015. Can we have images in e-mails this year?

Wouldn't using inline images (like other atlassian products already do) be a relatively simple way of fixing both of these issues?

Now atlassian are targeting the enterprise, where Lotus Notes is widespread, having stash emails look so bad gives a very unprofessional impression.

            Mark,

However, from your screenshot it appears that you are using Lotus Notes. Unfortunately Lotus Notes is not a supported email client in Stash, and there is an existing issue with some discussion from our Product Manager as to the reasons for this - STASH-5217.

If your Lotus Notes client can't load images from your Stash server in the same environment where your browser can I suggest you contact your Lotus Notes administrators and see whether there is some sort of equivalent whitelisting that needs to be done in order to allow the images to load.

            Regards,

Perhaps we need some more screenshots to demonstrate visually how unprofessional this looks.

The same problem in JIRA was classified as major bug. Why it's a mere suggestion in case of Stash? Please change it - it affects every single notification, and there is no easy workaround for this.

Stash 3,4 still looks really bad (attached a screenshot)

This is a big problem for us. We are seeing this problem even on the same network. The pull request emails look horrendous, the link to the pull request isn't even visible (as it's a image link, white on white).

We have to tell users to click that invisible link below the date. The product appears really unpolished as a result of this very small but highly visible bug.

I would vote for a configuration that allows embedding of images in the email, which would fix this once and for all.
