Typing is very slow in text editor for commit messages

When typing commit messages there is a noticeable latency before a character appears on the screen. It seems to be independent of turning on/off spell-checking.

I downloaded version 2.6.1-beta-0 and typing was OK at first. However, it got noticeably slower over time. I have the software open while working on the source code (about 6 hours now).
