      Problem Definition

With the latest release, JIRA v1000.456.2, the Kanban Backlog is showing the subtasks in Backlog.
Customers that were previously using Backlog on Scrum Board, expect that subtasks should not be shown.
Customer says that having subtasks in Backlog makes planing difficult.

      Suggested Solution

Remove the subtasks form Kanban Backlog

      Workaround

Use a filter for the board that doesn't show sub-tasks

project = "Project Name" and issuetype != Sub-task ORDER BY Rank ASC

Note: Because of the filter used, the subtasks are not shown in the Kanban Board neither but there is a note in the Issue Detail View.

I was about to ignore damian1's comment above, but then I went to try it.

Apparently Quick Filters are now available in the Backlog. When did that happen?

Anyway, he is right that there is a reasonable workaround now.

Here's a real work around for those who want to display sub-tasks in the board but hide them in the backlog: Create a Quick Filter for your board.

            type not in (sub-task)

Now you can display them or hide them with the simple click of a button.

This should still be fixed by Atlassian.

We need this as well. Disapointing to see things like this keep getting closed with no proper resolution.

Hello All! I just added the hide subtasks filter recommended here in my "Classic Software Project" and it allows me to hide or show the subtasks in my Backlog or the Kanban board independently. Hope is working for all now

why is teh status closed? Is Atlassian not planning to work on this?  We are trying to use Kanban boards and having the sub-tasks in the backlog is a nightmare for planning

This is needed. Please keep the behavior same between Kanban and Scrum board.

            +1 on that one.

For my scenario, I don't want subtask to be displayed on the backlog, because it is used by the PO to sort out the overall priority and filter what is going to come to the teams next. But on the actual Kanban board I want to see the subtask because when teams are taking over, they create subtasks to the stories to breakdown the work.

Just a simple toggle "Show subtasks on backlog" is surely not a hard thing to add! Sad that this got rejected and closed...

Using a Quick Filter to hide sub-tasks works in the Kanban board.

In the Backlog, using a Quick Filter to hide sub-tasks also hides the parent user story. The backlog just shows a line saying "All sub-tasks hidden".

"An easy workaround until then is to add a Quick Filter to hide sub-tasks." That works.

Honestly, the workaround does not solve the issue. Now I have two options, neither of them are good:

            • Not show subtasks at all or
            • Always show subtasks

In reality I want to hide the subtasks when planning (on the backlog) and show them when working (on the kanban board). This is not possible today.

I don't understand how providing a work-around would considered this resolved.

It still seems like an issue.  Could someone provide some more clarity?

I would also like the option to show sub-tasks on the Kanban board.

So where are you at with collapsing these sub-tasks by default?  And on a side note, why don't we have the same capability (to show sub-tasks) on the scrum board.

That sounds like an excellent way forward.

We're working on improvements for the display of sub-tasks to have them collapsed in a parent group by default. An easy workaround until then is to add a Quick Filter to hide sub-tasks.

Better still is to have it configurable whether sub-tasks are shown or not. A bit of research online has shown me that some users do want them shown and others like us don't.
