It would be nice to rank the Epics against the other Epics - independant of the Stories that are linked to them. It is a cross-team activity before the different teams start working on their parts of the Epics. So Epics need to be ranked sometimes even before Stories exist.

May be the two Screenshots illustrate the problem:

      nothing to select in Backlog

I can easily set the Rank of Epics in ClassicBoard.
In both cases, the Filter filters for Epics only.

Martin, thanks for the explanation. The hint for the kanban board to rank Epics is the solution for me. I created a Kanban board for the Epics and can now rank them there. Thanks a lot, Meino

meino, by global context I meant that they are ranked relative to each other with all epics in the JIRA instance.
Epics can be sorted in the epic panel of the Backlog (plan mode) by dragging them. Epics cannot be viewed in the middle column of the Backlog (plan mode) and are not shown inline with other issues in the Scrum boards.
However, currently Kanban boards do show epics inline with other issues and can be used to view epics in work mode. So, a kanban board could be created for your epics. Ranking them in this board would be the same as ranking them in the epic panel.
            Kind regards,
            Martin

What does "global context" mean? How can I configure a board so that I can see Epics in the middle of the Plan Mode and can change their rank relative to each other (not at the left border for filtering)? Or is there another way how I can influence/change the rank of epics relative to each other. IMHO "Rank" only be influenced in Plan Mode via drag&drop. I would appreciate a hint, if there is any way to change relative rank of epics.
            Thanks in advance

Epics are currently ranked relative to each other in the global context (per instance).

Managing the requirements for our Product-Suite across 18 scrum-teams currently relies on ranking Epics, often before Stories are associated to the Epics. The ProductOwners of the different team then take the Epic's rank into account, when planning their Sprints.
Since the overall controlling of our Priorities relies on this, which we currently can easily do with the Classic Board. We cannot switch to the Rapid Board, until we can also rank Epics there.
Please, give us a solution as fast as possible.
            Kind regards
