Currently there is no way to add a custom field that will display a time or duration. Closest thing is a Number custom field which only takes integers or decimals. We need something similar to the Original Estimate field as part of the Time Tracking feature.
Use Case:
Want to add a "Baseline Estimate" field that we would like to compare with the Time Tracking Original Estimate field that is already there. If we could add this as a custom field then we could have the data and then run searches or reports as comparison.
Workaround:
None currently. There are also no plugins available in the Cloud version that extend the custom field options.

Considering there are other issues created around the same year that got over 2k votes and are still marked for "future consideration" I don't see a way out of this in the lifespan of our current careers. But we can dream.
I love coming back to this issue years later and still seeing people say "we need this asap".
Again something the server variant of Jira offered. After migrating from server to cloud, we are missing our time custom fields

I want someone who files a Bug ticket to be able to estimate how long they spend resolving the bug manually. This can help my team prioritize Bug ticket resolution.
This feature would be extremely helpful. Need to jump through hoops to work around.
Needed this feature for so long that I've left the job I was originally in that required it and moved to a different job... that also requires it.
I need to separate Dev hours from QA hours and if I were able to start with a custom field that matched both Remaining Hours and Log Work field formats it would be much simpler.
Another vote for this. We need to be able to add a field for our change requests that has a "planned outage length" field but need to ensure users enter this as a dd:hh:mm format. There is no field that will currently allow this.

Seriously... why isn't this a thing. I want a field to separate QA time from Development time .... please just make time duration a custom field type.
@Ireneo - This is not feature that everyone uses. Therefore it is not a core priority. That is why Marketplace apps such as Abacus exist. They can display duration fields as well as calculate duration from time.
It's shameful that this feature isn't included already. Wow. Also since there's no way to edit the Original Estimate field, not even in the name.
Going to admit, I find it amusing that this ticket has been open for so long.
It's not like this field doesn't already exist within the Jira code base, it just needs to be exposed to this context.
We also need this and are looking for alternatives, e.g. marketplace apps. If anyone has a solution, please let us know
