The same format is used for both parent issues and sub issues.

If the issue is a sub issue JIRA View screen shows the same information as

Some Project / ABC-123 / ABC-456

Suggestion:

Make the notification mails also indicate that the issue (which is subject to the notification message) is a subtask of ABC-123
