    Description

NOTE: This suggestion is for JIRA Server. Using JIRA Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

For fields with Wiki Markup, it would be useful to be able to switch the markup off for a section of text.
eg if a section contains a number of special characters, it is simpler and cleaner to turn markup off for the whole section, rather than having to escape each individual character.

Note that there already exists a tag called "noformat".

Unfortunately it ACTUALLY produces "preformatted" text like this.
It may be nice to deprecate this tag, and rename to "preformat".

Because "noformat" is not available, another suggested name would be "nowiki" or "nomarkup".

      See JRA-14297 for more information.

I just saw in JRA-8175 a suggestion that wiki markup fields could act like "plain text" by default, and only switch to wiki markup if a particular tag occured to TURN IT ON.
This seems like an even better suggestion, as the user that knows about wiki is the one who turns it on. This could be a configurable option in the Wiki field, and could default to current behaviour for backward compatibility.
