We (Striata) have created a SOAP commandline tool for managing versions. When trying the clear releases (set to unreleased), we ran into a problem which prevented us from clearing the release date. I tracked down the problem to rpc-jira-plugin\src\java\com\atlassian\jira\web\action\project\CreateVersionBean.java (see attached patch).
