Currently, if we have a Screen Scheme with dedicated Screens set for Issue View and Issue Edit for each Work Item operation, Jira cloud has a different behavior depending on the field type utilized.

• Empty Read-Only fields (not mapped to the Edit Screen and placed in the Context Fields area): Will always be displayed in the Issue View, even when empty.
• Empty Short Text fields (not mapped to the Edit Screen and placed in the Context Fields area): Will only be displayed in the Issue View if they have a value set.

Example configuration

1. Create a Short Text Test Field as a Short text (plain text only) field type and a Read Only Test Field as a Text Field (read only) field type.
2. Create two screens, one for Issue Edit and the other for Issue View.
3. Add the new Short Text Test Field and Read Only Test Field fields to the Issue View screen only (don't include them in the Issue Edit screen)
4. Now, edit the screen scheme for your project and associate each screen you just created (Edit and View screens) with their respective work item operation (Edit and View issues).
5. Add the Short Text Test Field and Read Only Test Field fields to the Context fields area of the Work Type Layout (if they are not already there.

From here on out, the Short Text Test Field will only be shown if it has a value set, and the Read Only Test Field will always be shown, regardless of containing a value.
