Show Create Child Issue Option in Issue View for Custom Issue Types in the Hierarchy

    • 944
    • Our product teams collect and evaluate feedback from a number of different sources. To learn more about how we use customer feedback in the planning process, check out our new feature policy.

      Problem Definition

It is not currently possible to create child issues from within the issue view for issue types that are created and configured as additional levels of hierarchy. The default Epic, Story, Task, and Sub-task issue types support this but custom issue types in the hierarchy do not.

      Suggested Solution

Allow child issue creation from the issue view for custom issue types in the current hierarchy.

      Workaround

Create the child issues manually and then link them to the desired parent via setting the Parent Link/Parent field or by dragging the issues underneath the desired parent in the plan view and then saving the changes to Jira.

With our plan the releases are set to Continuous track meaning Products receive changes and features as soon as they become available. However, I do not see this feature available. Please confirm release date.

Please confirm that this feature is also available for custom issue types set at the Epic level. We are looking for the ability to be able to create a child through our custom SUS CR issue type - level 1.

            Hi everyone,

The ability to create child issues for additional levels of hierarchy is now enabled. If you are in the bundled release track, this will be rolled out in the May release.

How this works: If you create a new hierarchy level named for example called “Initiative” to be above Epic, you are now able to create Epics from the issue view of issues at the Initiative level. Thank you for your patience.
            Regards,
            Mendel Liang

How in the world is this basic functionality not possible yet? The fact you can't just work downstream and create children from and parents that are above epics is ridiculous.

We've created a workaround for this using a manually triggered automation, so if we can do it ....

I can't add a screen grab here, so the generic automation is:

            When: Manual trigger from issue

            • Groups that can run trigger: 'All logged in users' or custom group depending on your setup
            • Show manual trigger for: Issue Type 'Custom Issue Type'
            • Prompt for input when rule is triggered
            • Add field
              • Child Epic Summary
                • Default Value: Empty
                • Required Field
                • Variable name: smartEpicSummary
              • Child Epic Description
                • Default Value: Empty
                • Required Field
                • Variable name: smartEpicDescription

            Then: Create issue

            • Project: same project
            • Issue type: Epic
            • Choose fields to set:
              • Summary: userInputs.smartEpicSummary
(note: you need to use double curly brackets before and after the smart value)
              • Description: userInputs.smartEpicDescription
(note: you need to use double curly brackets before and after the smart value)
              • Parent: Trigger issue

            Hey 1e0d3f3c508a,
            Thanks for the answer!

We're looking for the ability to create child issues from the parent issue screen

I just was thinking, that if Epic Link will become Parent, and there is an opportunity to create Child issue from Epic screen, then it might be that Create Child Issue button will also appear in all Parents.
