      Atlassian update - 16 July 2020

      Hi everyone,

      Today we have an update on Trash for Projects. We’re excited to announce that Trash for Projects is generally available as part of Jira Software.

      Note that trash will work only for projects. It will not work for issues. We evaluated trash for issue over the last few days; unfortunately we don't have any plans to support this in JIRA for the foreseeable future.

      Please remember that jira.atlassian.com is one of many inputs for the JIRA roadmap. You can learn more about our process here.

      I understand that our decision may be disappointing. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I am keeping this ticket as "Gathering Interest" so that you votes and comments can help us gather more information.

      You can learn more about Trash for Projects at https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiracloud/trash-for-jira-software-and-jira-core-projects-1001820064.html

      Regards,
      Ritesh Ranjan
      Product Manager, JIRA Platform

      Sometimes, users will accidentally delete issues, and the steps to restore those issues usually involves restoring backups, which would take quite a lot of time and effort.

      As such, it would be great if JIRA had some sort of Recycle Bin or Trash (like in Confluence) so that users would be able to restore any accidentally deleted issues easily.

      Notes

      Support are unable to recover accidentally deleted issues as per our data storage policy.

      We encourage customers to regularly back up their products so they can always recover their data. See the following articles for more information:

      You may also be able to recover data from your Sandbox instance if you have one.

      Workaround Via third-party apps and API

      • If you are a premium and Enterprise customer then you can use the Archive Issues API option.

      Preventive Workaround

      We can build this rule below to send a notification with information about the deleted issue in the future, using the Automation for Jira, a native feature in Jira.
      Follows these steps to access the Automation for Jira: Jira >> settings >> System >> Automation rules

      Email information to add in the rule:

      SUBJECT
      Issue deleted {{issue.key}} - {{issue.summary}}

      CONTENT
      This issue was deleted.

      Issue Key: {{issue.key}}
      Summary: {{issue.summary}}
      Description: {{issue.description}}
      Who delete the issue: {{initiator.displayname}}

      You can have this email sent to a mailbox that you can go back to when you want to identify who deleted an issue.

            Suffered an accidental issue delete today, and was shocked to find there was no Trash for Issues, especially considering Trash for Projects already deletes/restores issues in that context.

            This is a must have feature that should be core functionality if you want to ensure a good user and customer experience. There are too many scenarios where an important issue can be deleted unintentionally. For some organisations this is also a requirement to help ensure record keeping guidelines/standards/legislation are properly complied to. Competitor products like Microsoft Azure DevOps restores deleted work items/issues from trash easily as an out-of-the-box feature.

            Is there any update on this?  Marketplace add-ons are cost prohibitive for this type of functionality which should be native to the product.  This problem has presented itself multiple times where we cannot simply restore the entire instance (3500 users, 500 projects).

            I strongly support the inclusion of the option to restore deleted or lost issues in the roadmap. This feature is critical for several reasons:

            1. Error Prevention: Accidental deletions can occur, and having a recovery option is essential.
            2. Data Security: It ensures that important information can be recovered in case of technical issues.
            3. User Confidence: Providing this safety net enhances the overall user experience.

            I urge you to reconsider this decision, as it would greatly benefit users.

            Thank you for your attention.

            Please implement the restoration mechanism. Businesses store the most important information in their systems that can be gone forever in 1 click.

            Or display an alert to your customers "We have no backups for your information. Make sure to use 3rd party marketplace apps to keep your data in more than 1 place".  Please don't ignore the obvious problem that is not acceptable in 2024 for such popular SaaS like yours.

            For those that are in the early stages of using Jira Product Discovery and don't yet have backup in place, the lack of an undo / trash bin for deleted Ideas is a huge problem.  Accidental deletes happen, and any modern app should have a recovery option, if only for a short time period.

            This is an absolute must, as human error occurs quite frequently, this should be a priority feature to be implemented.  I do think Jira will lose customers by not having this feature as this can cause major chaos in some projects.  Or at least an undo feature would be welcome.

            Hi Khamsi,

            That is unfortunate, I was able to recover a few of my deleted tickets from my connected sandbox. If you have a dev sandbox connected, please check it. The tickets might still be on sandbox and not deleted. Unless you have constant sync between prod or you do not have a sandbox.

            There might be a lot of v lookups that you have to do outside Jira with csv extracts as you do not know which tickets were deleted but I think its your best bet.

            Hope things get better.

            Cheers.

            Wanted to provide my use case here, we had a disgruntled employee go in and delete issues on us.   We don't have a way to restore those issues with all the attachments, comments, and status that are now lost.    It is very disruption to now spend time to figure out what those issues were content that were there previously.  I would like to add my vote to prioritize this feature request higher on the list.

            We lost hundreds of issues today - along with history and context. Impossible to restore these so we do not now know what is in development, on test, on PROD. Extremely disappointed to only learn today that there is no automatic backup feature or that Atlassian support cannot retrieve a deleted project and its issues - particularly given it is so easy to hit the wrong button - which happened in our case.

            This would be incredibly beneficial to our workflows, and is something we were used to having in Rally before we converted to Jira. Controlling the deletion of issues, though I understand the reasoning, feels heavyweight, and the inability to restore issues that are deleted in the case of accidents, misunderstandings, or simply changing your mind later means that it is likely some context or information may be lost.  Even with perfect recall for the description, it is quite likely any attachments aren't retained anywhere else, and are gone for good.

            I do not understand why this issue is linked as a DUPLICATE to JRACLOUD-23498. There seem to be two feature requests from people:

            1. A recycle bin for issues within a project (current issue). Aka the Trash in a Confluence Space.
            2. A recycle bin for deleting a whole project (JIRA-CLOUD-23498).

            The first is not implemented yet, and we at Alliander (7000 people) would really like to have it.

            I did a migration to Cloud and one of the projects was not imported successfully. To be able to re-import using the migration tool, I have to delete the project from Cloud. I tried this several times but I am unable to permanently delete the project from Trash. I keep getting "Something went wrong. Unable to delete "project" project. Try again. I have tried several times. Any leads on what I can do. Restore function works okay.

            Hi Ritesh,

            Thanks for the update on this. The feature to keep a Deleted project in a trash bean will save someone's day for sure. A decision to. delete a project in Jira is probably thought through quite well. Based on my experience, though, it happens more often, that you delete an issue by accident and if you are unable to restore it, then that is quite big of a deal as you loose communication, time logging, and the other things linked to it.
            Hope this feedback will add to the scores of the Issue restoring feature on your roadmap

            Trying to delete a task, I accidentally deleted the whole project. I figured out how to delete a task after and when we request that, the system gives us a pop up warning in red saying that task will be deleted for good. To delete a whole project, the system doesn't give any message. Yes, the bin option should be available. To keep deleted projects/tasks at least for 48 hours to 30 days.

            Hope you can understand my frustration as JIRA user as a simple feature could help me, avoiding me to get afraid to be fired now.

            This is an absolute deal breaker. I cannot fathom why you'd not have this in place.

            Accidental deletes happen, especially with the current convoluted UI that's not user-friendly AT ALL. Expecting us to then reconstruct tickets (sometimes dozens of them) from notifications is a joke. The people whose conversations I'd need have left the business. Things are not static, and Jira should REALLY know that. Isn't that the whole point of the tool? To enable us to deal with changing requirements?

            Do as Notes or Photos does - deleted items are recoverable for 30 days. Even 1 day would be a lifesaver.

            While cleaning up some poorly setup boards I accidentally deleted an entire project including all the tickets!  Atlassian supports answer for my help was something along the line of "sorry...we can't help...you should have run a backup"!!Unable to render embedded object: File (  VERY frustrated by this.  I by a web service so I DONT have to worry about stuff like this) not found.!

            Seriously considering cancelling my account as a result of this issue!
