Cannot change project lead on projects that exceed the 'Maximum Project Key size' setting

Summary

Users cannot change the project lead on projects that exceed the 'Maximum Project Key size' setting.

Environment

JIRA v1000.35.1

Steps to Reproduce

1. Open a project that exceeds the 'Maximum Project Key size'
2. Click on 'Project Administration'
3. Click on 'Users and Roles'
4. Click on 'Edit Defaults'
5. Enter a new project lead then click on 'Update'
   • Nothing happens, the pop up remains open

Expected Results

Project lead should be updated

Actual Results

Nothing happens.

3. Notes
It appears to be the case that updates to the project are being rejected because of validation failures. Unfortunately it does not seem like these errors are being reported back to the UI.

Workaround

In these cases the validation can be relaxed by increasing the 'Maximum Project Key size' setting in the 'General Configuration' admin screen.
