Please document the difference between JIRA startup.sh and start-jira.sh

    • We collect Jira feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for JIRA Server. Using JIRA Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

JIRA 4.3 has a new script in the bin directory named start-jira.sh. It's not clear what the difference is. I didn't find any reference in the docs looking for "start-jira.sh"

Thanks for taking the time to raise this issue.

Due to the large volume of JIRA feature suggestions, we have to prioritise our development efforts. In part, that means concentrating on those issues that resonate the most with our users.

I am writing this note to advise you, that we have decided to close your Suggestion as it has not gained traction on jira.atlassian.com. We believe being upfront and direct with you will assist you in your decision making rather than believing Atlassian will eventually address this issue.

Thank you again for your suggestion and if you have any concerns or question, please don’t hesitate to email me.

            Hi All,

There is a recently created KB article that addresses this:

            Cheers!

I think you're right since it appears to be common across all the recent Atlassian product releases. It appears that "start-foo.sh" and "stop-foo.sh" are now the recommended script to use for application "foo" and they check the pid of the running process and sets the user.

However start-jira.sh at least calls start-jira in some cases, which seems confusing to me. It would be great to have this in the docs somewhere since it's a change that affects all JIRA admins.

David Corley added a comment - Might be of help: http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CONFKB/What's+the+difference+between+the+new+start-confluence.sh,stop-confluence.sh+and+the+old+startup.sh,shutdown.sh It's for Confluence, but I suspect it's the same question/answer
