REST API support for the sonatype nexus crowd plugin

The sonatype nexus crowd plugin still uses the SOAP API. It would be very convenient if this plugin would be rewritten to use the new REST API.
According to the original author of this plugin, there are no plans to rewrite this plugin:
      https://github.com/justinedelson/nexus-crowd-plugin/issues/2

So it may be in Atlassian's interest to support the integration of nexus by rewriting this plugin in-house. I think that a crowd plugin for nexus would fit nicely into many, many development environments.

As of Nexus 2.7, the Crowd integration included with Nexus Professional supports this:

We have completely rewritten the Atlassian Crowd Nexus plugin. It performs better, is more reliable and depends on current Crowd REST APIs under the hood. Upgrades of your previous crowd configuration should be handled seamlessly.

For Nexus users who are not customers of Sonatype, a fork of nexus-crowd-plugin (PatrickRoumanoff/nexus-crowd-plugin at GitHub) has been updated to similarly include REST support:

The crowd integration is now using the Crowd REST API.
