Yep. Didn't even want to use Jive but guess what? It supports this and it made them a whole lot of money. Outrageous that is still only a "medium" priority feature request. Huge corporations are looking to replace mailing lists, guys, you missed the boat.

Note this is 3 years old a request and is a feature of competitive platforms like Jive and others.  It can be implemented to also support the reply-add-comment to page one https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-5002 which is also broken since 2005.

sorry for the edit spam folks, damn editor in this thing keeps thinking I wanted underlines just because I used a + sign more than once.  It was even showing me in the comment box it was not underlined because I cleared it but then it put it back in upon submit.  Maybe another JIRA bug I should file...

Echoing the exact situation as the others here, we're an enormous corporation and at the 10,000+ license level not a hobbyist at all.  In managing the infrastructure needs of a team of thousands I can tell you that email threads are indeed king and we track and reply and collaborate continuously on every device.  Forcing you to get a VPN-on-demand up and click through and use the confluence comment interface to type in a reply is a major slowdown.  Many corporations additionally dont put their collaboration platforms on the VPN for security concerns.  In this case you have to remember later that day to get to a terminal and login to post a comment.  It's a big problem.  Please consider delivering this feature, I guarantee it'll be a huge win for you guys.

This was highlighted immediately after adoption as a major shortcoming, as this has been outstanding for a year now it does not seem to be high on the list of priorities.

This is a big deal for big corporations where mailing lists are king. It's a show stopper. I can say with certainty that you're missing out on huge licenses.
