I would like to be possible to disable commenting on a page. Some pages (like main pages or portal pages) on a site don't need comments. It isn't appropriate. Not only can you not disable commenting on a page (like through a simple checkbox on the edit page), but even if you disable editing of a page entirely, that still won't prevent commenting.

Please improve this situation. Best of all would be a simple checkbox: [ ] Users can comment on this page. I would also be ok with tying it to page permissions.

Atlassian Status as of 1st November, 2011

      Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all your feedback on this issue. After much discussion we've concluded we won't be implementing this feature request. Our goal is to continue to simplify the product, by focusing on building for the majority of our customers. Whilst the ability to disable comments on a specific page or blog is a completely valid feature request, we believe it just crosses the line in terms of adding an extra level of complexity to the product and is a use case that isn't catering for the majority of our customers.

In saying this, there are several ways in which this can still be achieved. For example, David Simpson has written up a blog post of how this can be done with a simple user macro on a page. Alternatively you could write a plugin to hide the comments block on a page. We welcome the plugin developer community to tackle this problem as it won't be something we will make core to the product.

Thanks for your patience with this issue.

      Cheers,
      Sherif Mansour

Yikes well, looks like Atlassian has some work to do to boot out nefarious accounts. Oh good the previous comment got removed yay (posting so I don't just look like a crazy person for the rest of time).

As I said two years ago ...

PLEASE REOPEN CONSIDERATION OF THIS FEATURE.

On behalf of my 5000+ worldwide users of our system, please implement a Comment / Inline Comment Restriction setting.

Sometimes a particular feature is not used by the "majority of customers" ... but is HIGHLY useful to those who NEED IT for the times WHEN THEY NEED IT!!

Unfortunately it is now too late for our Server instance so we are SUPER-ANNOYINGLY hamstrung with the stupidity of adding 50 blank lines  at the bottom of the page to push the Comments facility off the bottom of the screen!!!

This is silly that pages can't have comments disabled.

For those who suffer from not having the option to restrict viewing for inline comments  Talk - Advanced Inline Comments can help you with that. It has a feature that allows setting default visibility restrictions for the comments on a space level. Say, you want your comments to be visible only internally. You can set default space viewing permissions for talk inline comments to a certain group or/and users.

Once you set visibility on a space level, all the comments that will be posted on pages in this space will be visible only for users included in space Talk permissions. But users that can post talk comments can set their own viewing restrictions for each inline comment they make (f.e. if they want to leave them privately or for other groups or users defined in the space talk permissions).

Yes ... we still need this feature .. we now host 6500 Users on our Confluence system ... 1500 more than 18 months ago when  last posted on this issue.  Consider that as 6500 votes for this enhancement.

Could this be revisited? Our team needs the ability to disable comments on the Confluence page level. For example, when we use Confluence for voting, we don't want anyone to comment on the topic on the voting page. Please reconsider adding this feature!

Shouting into the void here, but, like others have already said, this is a key feature that you have opted not to implement.

I don't want to have to resort to server-side CSS solutions (that may break in future releases) - I want to have this capability as a non-admin user.  And now all I've got is an ugly note at the bottom of my page telling people how to provide feedback - i.e.: don't comment below.

Hi all ... especially Atlassian people.

We have lots of pages where we welcome our User Comments even if there are Permission groups and/or Edit Restrictions which exclude them from Editing the page Content.

But we also want to separately prevent Comments on certain pages, not the whole Space and not the whole permission group.

i.e. we need to nominate who is allowed (Restricted) to make Comments and Inline Comments.

yes that means the setting of that is "linked" to a Users individual Page Editing Permission/Restriction to the specific page

I see this kind of reply a lot: "Our goal is to continue to simplify the product, by focusing on building for the majority of our customers." Not just from Atlassian, but others too.  I think it really falls short of being a useful reply.  There's more to the customer base than just the "majority".  The real question is if it's useful to a significant number of people (not necessarily the majority).  I'm not sure what the useful cut-off is, but requiring that it benefit 51% or more seems like your missing out on worthwhile improvements.
