      Inserting custom characters using the WYSIWYG editor will render them as "?" when the page is saved and displayed.

            Could you please define what you mean by special characters? If you paste the Iñtërnâtiônàlizætiøn text in the encoding test into the wysiwyg editor does it appear as question marks?

            The markup you have pasted in the comment above appears with question marks also as jira uses the same rendering as confluence. Please put your markup in an attachment and attach it to this issue.

            Could you please attach the wiki markup of the page containing the special characters that you are using? I have a suspicion that this is not related to Confluence, rather yet to the character encoding used within your system.
