Users from LDAP do not appear in people directory or search results until they have logged in

NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding bug report.

This is due to the mechanism we use for generating the people directory: it searches the Confluence index for user profile records.

User profiles are only created when a user logs in for the first time.

I'm marking this issue resolved as we already have https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-28615 raised as a regression.

Hi veerle.creyns@medecbenelux.be, sorry to hear you're hitting this. Would you be able to create a ticket in our Support Site, https://support.atlassian.com, so we can help you look into what's going on with your instance?

We have the same problem, but the work arounds suggested did not help.
I have a user, who already logged on (you can see this in the userlist as administrator) but doesn't show up in the people directory, hence also not in the share list.
I opened http://wiki/display/~jdoe for the user, and I can see his details in that case, but even opening this for 15 min didn't solve the problem.
Reindexing (our database is not so big yet, so it's possible) didn't solve the problem also.
Is there another workaround to get the user in the people directory?

            Thanks

We're having this problem with users from JIRA. We're not using LDAP.

            Hi All,

it still doesn't work for me:

            • The user has already logged in
            • I saw his Profile Page and I edited his details and saved
Still cannot find the user in the Insert Link menu.

            Can you please help?
            We have version 4.2.3

            Thanks in advance!

The fix detailed here – https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DEV/Enabling+Contributor+Filtering+for+Search – doesn't appear to work in Confluence 4.2.1. It returns no progress.

I would like to see this issue resolved very soon. It has real implications for enterprise collaboration. Many enterprises are going to use external user management and will have thousands of users automatically-added to the system. It will be ridiculous if those users cannot receive "shares" or "mentions" simply because they haven't logged in yet. In fact, sharing content is one of the easiest ways to get somebody interested in logging-in.

This also affects Crowd directories. New users, the result of a synchronization with Crowd, do not appear in the people directory. Also, the following functionality will not work for these new users:

            • Search
            • @Mentions
            • Share Page

If they log in then all is fine. Also, you can force the user to work by visiting their profile URL by manually entering it (since you cannot click on them in the people directory):

            http://wiki/display/~jdoe

This URL will bring up JDOE's profile and will trigger whatever is necessary to use the above features with this user.

This seems to affect users imported from JIRA too, still unfixed in the latest version of Confluence...

Updated the title and description to more accurately describe the problem. This problem is almost a duplicate of CONF-10769 in that if we fix CONF-10769 then it is very likely we will also fix this problem.

Thanks a lot Ulrich !! you know what - you have solved my issue which was over almost one year old. I have been following up since, and everybody pointed to some bugs or were frozen. I have rechecked it , and it works as you said. Just great. My business will be happy. Users always asked that why the confluence-users and people directory user numbers are different !

So - is this how confluence will always be , or will you guys change this architecture in the future?

For external user management LDAP/Jira Users do not show up in the people directory even after logging in. They show up only after editing their profile. Only then a Personal Info Object is created which is included in the index.

I faced a similar issue in v2.4.3 , and it still exists in v2.6 . I am using external user management.I have enabled ConfluenceGroupJoiningAuthenticator.
