The RSS feed does not support HTTPS feeds. Confirmed that Thunderbird can access the feed while the same URL in Confluence results in an error.

Retrieving RSS feeds over HTTPS should definitely not be a problem, as long as there is no authentication required. Please follow Jeremy's instructions, or raise a support case at https://support.atlassian.com if you need assistance with configuring the certificates.

If you have an authenticated feed, you should vote for the related issue, CONF-7927.

What is the certifying authority on the site's SSL certificate?

From the error message, it looks like the site certificate is being accepted by Thunderbird, but not by Java.
