      The fix has been backported

For more information about this and related content duplication issues, please see the discussion at Confluence Server and Data Center: Content duplication fix and next steps - Atlassian Community.

      Issue Summary

When editing a page, the page content, or a subset of the page content is duplicated. This behaviour occurs intermittently without any special actions by the user.

      Steps to Reproduce

This behaviour is not consistently reproducible, but may occur when a page is edited.

      Expected Results

The editor should display only the page content.

      Actual Results

The content appears to be duplicated in edit mode, and publishing the page results in the duplicated content being visible in view mode.

      Root Cause

tl;dr - Confluence and Synchrony metadata intermittently falls out of sync triggering a chain of events that result in content duplication.

When a user clicks the edit button, Synchrony will reconcile (merge) the page content held by Synchrony, with the draft content held in Confluence. This reconciled content is then sent to the web browser to be displayed in the editor, along with draft and synchrony metadata. When the editor loads, it synchronizes the new content back to Synchrony in a process called a client reconciliation to ensure everything is in sync.

The content duplication occurs during this client reconciliation phase. From the reports provided by customers and our internal reproduction work, we identified that the Synchrony metadata being provided contained a null value in place of the expected revision data. When Synchrony performed the client reconciliation, it performed the operation with an empty source document, thus all the content in the draft from the browser appeared new. Synchrony takes this "new" content, and adds it to the existing Confluence draft. This data is then sent back to the browser, where the user will see this duplicated content.

On the surface this may seem a nonsensical approach, but in the context of Synchrony, this approach works perfectly so long as the correct Synchrony metadata is provided. This explains how the content duplication occurs, but the root cause is earlier in the process when the page was last saved from Synchrony into the Confluence database.

Confluence takes advantage of an event system in the Hibernate Object Relation Manager. When a page is saved from Synchrony to Confluence, an event fires that synchronizes the metadata for Confluence and Synchrony, then cleans up stale Synchrony metadata. We identified that this event was intermittently and silently failing, resulting in the old metadata being left in Confluence, and then the matching metadata in Synchrony being deleted. Thus the when Synchrony performs the first reconciliation above, it does so with metadata from Confluence that doesn't exist in Synchrony, resulting in a null version being returned, and subsequently being served to the browser.

This issue was often automatically corrected by Confluence depending on a host of conditions that are outside of the scope of this explanation. This further obscured the root cause of the issue as it added a level of randomness to an already intermittent issue.

      Workaround

      1. In the Editor, click the Ellipsis (...) symbol
      2. Click Revert to last published version

            Hello everybody,

with the help of the Atlassian support team we could identify a new bug behaving somehow similarly like this closed one.

Please have a look at Error during linked content reconciliation (triggered by an attachment) causes some linked pages content to be duplicated (CONFSERVER-99157) for more details. We faced it on a 8.5.18 LTS version, but it seems to (hopefully) occur not that frequently since several factors have to be present at the same time.

            Thanks, Rainer

            Hi All,

            fc0a7625b9a0

Support says that this may affect pages that were created prior to the 7.23.5 upgrade, but it's not clear to me whether they mean pages that were created prior, or drafts that were created prior, and published after.

When a new page is created, we also create a draft to go with it. So pages created whilst running an affected version, and pages edited but not published whilst running an affected version. Only drafts created during the period that Confluence was impacted by this issue should be effected. Publishing on a fixed version of Confluence will still cause the duplication to appear as it's already in the draft.

If the page draft doesn't already have duplication present, there is no additional editing/saving required. If the page already has duplication, the content will need to be manually corrected and saved. This fix stops introduction of new duplication, but it's unable to resolve existing duplication that may be in an existing draft.

I'd encourage people to read Confluence Server and Data Center: Content duplication fix and next steps - Atlassian Community as it contains an explanation of the fix and what can still occur.

bb12bd82e483 - It is very likely a draft, thought I cannot say for certain. We've been monitoring this through support channels and haven't seen indication of new duplication.

            I hope this helps.

I had a page just duplicate itself, but I'm not sure if there was a draft lingering from the earlier version.

I'm in the same boat.  I've caught a few pages with this behavior, but it's difficult to judge whether they had preexisting drafts or not.  I appreciate your added info!

We're seeing this behavior on pages that were created prior to the upgrade but had no drafts open prior to the upgrade.  I'm waiting for support to clarify.  I'm not sure what the process is to bring older pages onto the right side of the fix, or if it's enough to simply edit the page once to "reset" it with this fix and expect no further problems for that page afterward.

Has anyone experienced this issue for existing pages that they know didn't have any existing drafts prior to the bugfix?

            Hi All,

Just a final update on this one.

We've continued to monitor the support channels and these issues for additional confirmed reports of content duplication, and thus far we've not received any reports that point towards new instances of duplicated content. With this, we believe that the issue has been fixed. As always, if anyone is able to provide a replication or a report file that shows new duplication, we'll investigate immediately.

Moving forward, we're going to discontinue actively monitoring these issue tickets for additional reports, and instead ask that you submit any reports, should new duplication occur, to the support team at https://support.atlassian.com.

            Hi 84825275a2fb,

Can you please review the Understanding the Fixes section of Confluence Server and Data Center: Content duplication fix and next steps - Atlassian Community.

If the duplication you're seeing isn't explained by the issues covered there, can you please then check the How You Can Help section, and then use the steps detailed on that page to open a ticket.

I'm hoping what you're seeing is a false positive, but we'll definitely look into it for you.

            Thanks,

We know, that it was not due to old drafts, which we also suspected. We will observe after 7.4.15 and see.

            Hey 40e76c6b9a52,

Based on what you've described, it's possible that the duplication occurred prior to the upgrade to Confluence 7.4.14, or that it was caused by another issue. Unfortunately with the information we have we won't be able to determine which it was.

You can get more information on the content duplication issues we're seeing at Confluence Server and Data Center: Content duplication fix and next steps - Atlassian Community..

I'd also recommend reviewing this issue as well as it's another duplication issue we're aware of CONFSERVER-69074: Duplicate Content Shown When Editing A Page After Modifying An Attachment (fixed in Confluence Server and Data Center 7.15.0, 7.4.15, 7.13.4).

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

            Thanks,

Some of our users still experience the duplication error after update to 7.4.14.

One of our users experienced this after the Editor didn't load and he reloaded the page. The page has been edited between this occurence and the update to 7.4.14.

            Hi All,

I just wanted to provide an update here on some findings in the other linked issues.

During our investigation of CONFSERVER-73383: Duplicate Content Shown When Editing A Newly Published Page (fixed in Confluence Server and Data Center 7.15.0), we confirmed that it is directly related to CONFSERVER-69074: Duplicate Content Shown When Editing A Page After Modifying An Attachment (fixed in Confluence Server and Data Center 7.15.0) and is fixed by the fix for that issue.

We additionally discovered that a number of plugins directly interact with the attachment manager in Confluence during page creation and publishing in a way that can cause this duplication to occur. This behaviour is completely transparent to the user, and does not require the user to have interacted with attachments at all. To be clear, the plugins are not the root cause of the issue but rather trigger a bug in Confluence. We have been able to confirm that the fix in Confluence 7.15.0 for CONFSERVER-69074 corrects this behaviour.

As many users here are running versions affected by these issues, you may find CONFSERVER-69074 is applicable in your environment.

If you would like to test for this issue, you can start Confluence without any plugins installed, and attempt to replicate the content duplication. If you're able to replicate the issue further; please review the steps to provide log files available here to provide additional log files.

I'll provide additional updates and new information becomes available.

            Thanks,
