This seems to be a regression of this: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-12006

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Setup Confluence 5.5.4 and 5.6.3
      2. Attach this file to any page (taken from CONF-12006)
      3. Wait for the index flush to run, or you can trigger it via Confluence Admin >> Scheduled Jobs, or you can rebuild the index via Confluence Admin >> Content Indexing
      4. Search for "random string of words"

Notice that the attachment will be found in Confluence 5.3, but not 5.5 and 5.6

      Workaround

Edit the document and save it as .doc instead. Then reattach to Confluence. .doc files can be indexed, but not .docx, it seems...

[CONFSERVER-35322] docx Files No Longer Indexed in Confluence 5.5 and 5.6

Thanks Denise, I'll ask them to have a look.

Hi daniel.sandbecker, I've tested in Cloud as well and it works just fine for me there. Maybe your indexing has run into a problem and stopped. I'd recommend contacting Atlassian Support, they can have a look at the instance for you and reindex it if required. And if there's still a problem, they can update this ticket with more information and we can revisit it. Hope this helps!

I'm on Confluence Cloud 5.9.0-OD-55-030 and neither older uploaded docx-files nor ones I add now for test show up when I search for known words or phrases from them.

Apologies for the late response on this one. This issue does not occur in Confluence 5.7.5, and it was likely resolved as part of the work on Files in 5.7. If you are experiencing this issue, I would recommend updating to Confluence 5.7.5 or above (5.8.4 has just been released as well, and I've confirmed this issue does not occur in it either).

Agree with the above sentiment by Daniel. This really needs to be resolved asap, probably even prioritized beyond new features. Users expect this functionality to work and it is transparent to them when it doesn't. (they likely think there are no matches to their search, rather than that docx files cant be indexed by the tool). If this worked in the past (5.4 and below), shouldn't it be a simple thing to reverse the broken code?

I plan to not upgrade confluence again until there is a fix to this issue.

To users this bug is as random as if pages with titles ending in "x" wouldn't be searchable. Confluence is sold with the promise that Word files are searchable: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/Cloud/Search#Search-Searchthecontentofattachments

Content randomly (in the perspective of users) not showing up in search undermines the trust in the tool.

            Hi christian.melancon

Thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately this issue is not on our immediate backlog, we have a number of more critical issues that we need to address before tackling this. As soon as we have more information on this we'll update this ticket with details.

            Hello,

Do you have an idea when this issue will be fixed? It represents a serious degradation of application functionality for us because we are currently migrating our document management system to Confluence and we can't afford to convert every Word document into a Confluence page in the short term. The work around of using .doc instead of .docx is not an option either.

            Thank you,
            Chris
