NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding bug report.

This may or may not be a duplicate of CONF-17621, about EXIF rotation, marked as "won't fix". I understand from that issue that there is some debate about whether this is Confluence's issue or a browser issue. Let me explain my experience.

      1. I take a picture with my iPhone, it displays it the correct way up
      2. I email it to myself, Gmail displays it the correct way up
      3. I accidentally import it into my Google Drive, it displays it the correct way up
      4. I download it to my Mac, it display it the correct way up
      5. I import it into Confluence, it displays it the wrong way round
      6. I start writing this ticket, and have an idea or two...
      7. I access it in Chrome using a file:// URI, it displays it the right way up
      8. I boot a Windows 7 VM and ping it over there, it displays it the right way up (perhaps a file:// URI in IE6 would be the nail in the coffin?)

      Hi All,

Thank you for your feedback on this issue thus far. This is certainly an issue which has done its round on the internet over the years for many browser and application vendors alike, with each pointing the finger at each other as to whether the application or browser should observe the EXIF rotation metadata.

The obvious solution is for all browsers to support the 'image-orientation' CSS, however after many years this is still only supported by Firefox.
We have explored no less than 6 different solutions to this issue as each brings pros and cons in terms of performance, behaviour and complexity.
As a result of this exercise, it has been decided that image rotation would be done server side based on the EXIF rotation metadata.

The actual implementation is somewhat different for Server and Cloud deployments, and thus the rollout/delivery may occur at different times, however is high up in the queue right now.

[CONFSERVER-32762] Image rotation of imported photographs is wrong

            Hi all,

I have the problem in 6.8.0 (Server).

Can anybody confirm that this has been resolved in a later version?

According to FF, image-rotation has been deprecated.

Warning: This property is likely to be deprecated in the near future, with its functionality moved into properties on the <img> and/or <picture>elements, with the possible exception of from-image. The flip and {{<angle>}}values were made obsolete as of FF63.

            What say you now?

Since we updated from CONF 5.10 to 6.9 we have that issue too. Hundreds of pages are impacted were fotos are now shown in wrong rotation. With the old release it was correctly displayed.

Why is this issue closed as "fixed" for 6.2.2?

Please reopen and solve that issue. And by the way: I don't see it as a minor issue. It has an impact on the usability and readability. We have a lot of documentation in Confluence and the manufacturing teams have an impact on their work. Nobody has time to manually rotate hundreds of fotos in hundreds of pages.

Even open source systems like WordPress are able to handle the orientation of those fotos from iPhone and iPad. Why not that professional expensive application  Confluence?

Has this ever been solved or rolled out in the Cloud Version?

I have an image that is correctly rotated in the file manager and in the browser (Firefox), yet gets the wrong rotation in Confluence Cloud "image preview".

This has been marked "resolved" one year ago. I would exchange the UI "flattening/re-imagining" for this and having nested tables back any time of the day.

            I spoke too soon.

The image is badly rotated as long as you didn't bonk "save".

After saving, the image as displayed has the correct rotation. We are halfway there then...

Tried the Rotate Images Plugin. The image quality was severely downgraded after rotation.

Yep, I just upgraded one of our clients from 5.6.4 to 6.8.1 and a number of pictures are now rotated 90 degrees. :/

They were fine in 5.6.4 before we did an xml export from 5.6 and xml import into 6.8.

I was kind of discouraged looking at the fix version but I am relieved I'm not the only one with this issue un a more current version of confluence.

I might try the Rotate Images add on.

            Hi,

Has there been any fix to this problem at all. According to the issue information, this is fixed with version 6.2.2

We upgraded to 6.8.0 and still have it. Was the bug introducded back again as a new feature?

            Workaround

For those who can't upgrade Confluence right way and need their images to be rotated can temporarily download Rotate Images add-on .

Those running still on Confluence 5.x can download an older version of the add-on and upload .jar file manually into Confluence.

I have the same issue. When I upload vertical pictures to confluence they are still showing in horizontal orientation. If I download them they again show correct vertical orientation.  When uploading an original photo to Confluence the photo is not upright. Then uploading the photo once more, the photo orientation was upright, but photo was smaller.

@Natalie - you're right. It's a quick fix but a major impact. It's almost like Atlassian are hoping that if they ignore it, we'll stop complaining!

There are open-source libraries that would deal with this. The fix is no more than half a day to implement and test.

The thing is, Atlassian products are widely used because they're cheap, not because they're good. That's the business model so bugs like this are not considered worth fixing.

Luckily, I've just finished my engagement with a customer who uses the Atlassian stack. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a different toolset with my next customer!

I took a photo on my Iphone 6 and no matter how I rotate it in paint, paint.net, or an exif editor directly, I am unable to get the photo to appear in portrait mode on a Confluence page.

I resized the image so that the horizontal/vertical size ratio was flipped, that resulted in the correct display of the image. It seems to me that Confluence assumes that the longer side should be the horizontal one, irrespective of the exif information.

            Disappointing.

            Hi jim.strange1575462634,

If you rotate the image a full 360 degrees and save it, then add it to Confluence, it'll add it in portrait. The issue isn't portrait vs landscape, but rather with the interpretation of the EXIF data.

I realise this isn't a fix, but it'll allow you to add your image with its correct orientation.

This is definitely a Confluence bug, and a shocking one at that.

I have the same problem, so I rotated the pictures by 90 degrees before importing them. Confluence still imported them landscape when they should be portrait.

It seems that Confluence doesn't care what mode the picture was taken in, it only expects pictures of rolling hills and seascapes to be imported. In other words, portrait images are EVIL and are not allowed.

It's pitiful that Atlassian has gone completely dark on a major bug that shouldn't take much time to fix.

Alexey - you've mentioned this multiple times throughout the thread. I think everyone here knows what your add-on does, but you do not have a solution for the cloud environment, correct?

Though not your fault, common users like myself should not have to worry about these details - Confluence should intake these pictures correctly and/or allow users to rotate the images inside the tools.

Open in firefox, chrome, preview, etc. image has correct orientation. Upload to the wiki, wrong orientation.

            Hello,
Just to clarify: the reason of this issue is in incorrect work with EXIF::Orientation property of a JPEG file. When it is set incorrectly, the browser may show the image rotated incorrectly.
Some programs fix this issue by reading an image, decoding it, then encoding and then saving with correct rotation. That leads to loose of image quality, growing image file size and loosing other EXIF data.
The other way is to fix just EXIF::Orientation property of this JPEG file – the issue will be fixed, other EXIF data untouched, image quality and file size not changed.
We have implemented this idea in CelesteCS Image Lossless Rotator plugin, which, in case of Confluence is the simplest solution of the wrong image rotation problem for affordable price.
            Thanks!

if you rotate in batch all your pictures 360(720?) degrees it will right what is wrong. Removes the iphone orientation replaces it with a mac orientation.

Issues been around for over a year now.
We have the same problems over here.
A fix without a plugin would be very much appreciated.

            Hello,
The laser-sharp solution for rotating images in Confluence is CelesteCS Image Lossless Rotator.
It rotates images lossless, which means the image quality and file size are not changed. Additionally it can rotate images automatically based on EXIF orientation tag. Plus, EXIF data is not lost, so you will not lose the information, where the photo has been made, after rotation.
            Thanks!

+1 I had exactly this problem yesterday — uploaded a photo to Confluence and it displayed in the wrong orientation. Is this issue on the road map to be fixed?

Take portrait photo with iPhone iOS 8
            Airdrop photo to OSX Yosemite
Drag and drop onto upload attachment widget in jira
            Photo is rotated to landscape
Photo opens as portrait in all other applications

I have this issue as well.
            1. I took a portrait photo with my phone and sent to my computer.
            2. I checked the EXIF properties and the orientation was +90 degrees.
            3. Opening image in Windows Photo Viewer and MSPaint it would ignore EXIF and just display as landscape.
            4. Opening image in Chrome and Firefox it would display as portrait, I assume it is taking into account the EXIF properties.
            5. I then Uploaded into Confluence it would display as landscape (my browser for Confluence was Chrome).
            6. I then downloaded the image from Confluence and the EXIF properties (+90 degrees) are still there.

So... if Chrome recognised the EXIF details as per step 4... then why when opening the same file through Confluence in step 5 does Chrome not taking into account the EXIF properties?
Does Confluence perform some extra manipulation to file on display? Is it some CSS?

I also have this issue with a photo take with my iphone 5s and uploaded to the Atlassian on-demand confluence.

I have the same issue with photos taken by Samsung Galaxy S4. EXIF info is not handled correctly on Confluence.
Photos are properly rotated on Mac / Windows OS so it should be EXIF handling issue... or other cause maybe.

I assume image rotation feature resolve these issues completely & it will help lots of people here.

I have also the same problem. I took a photo with my mobile in portrait rotation and uploaded via dropbox to my desktop. It shows correct rotation in various applications but in Confluence it will be imported in landscape rotation.

I have the same problem. Here is the publicly available wiki page: https://confluence.ets.berkeley.edu/confluence/display/CANVAS/Course+Provisioning+Simple+Create+Design+Ideas where you should be able to download a photo.
