We collect Confluence feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.
NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.
The feature documented at https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Changing+the+Sequential+Order+of+Pages?focusedCommentId=420184815&=#ChangingtheSequentialOrderofPages-Changingthepageordertoalphabetical is great, but it would be truly wonderful if reverse-sort were an option, particularly to support the Meeting Notes blueprint. Out-of-the-box use of Meeting Notes will produce a page tree that looks like this:
- Meeting Notes
- 2013-10-25 Meeting Notes
- 2013-10-26 Meeting Notes
- 2013-10-27 Meeting Notes
It's pretty clear imho that it's much more desirable to keep the latest meeting notes on top, as in:
- Meeting Notes
- 2013-10-27 Meeting Notes
- 2013-10-26 Meeting Notes
- 2013-10-25 Meeting Notes
But there is not a nice mechanism for making this happen without resorting to manual re-ordering. Imposing a simple reverse-alphabetical sort on the Meeting Notes child pages would do it (assuming an appropriate naming convention were used - like the one that the out-of-the-box Meeting Notes blueprint suggests).

[CONFSERVER-31358] Expand page order alphabetical sort to allow reverse sort
The reason Atlassian products get such little traction in the businesses I support is simply that they add so much 'fluff' features that get pushed out to everyone that just makes for convoluted UI and all the basics of usability just go ignored.
The basic request for having page sort order options that are useful seems to be typical of Atlassian, it's 100% design by committee.. I never asked for white boards and all the other 'fluff' yet it's rammed down my throat because rather than have options for all the features which I can selectively turn on, they are hardcoded for me to just make the UI messier and any efficient workflow needlessly hampered.
Come on, adding Z-A and 'Changed Date ASC' and 'Changed Date DESC' would be childs play considering it's basic SQL..
The tools are fast becoming so half baked that they are of no use to anyone, it's just fluff/tat and half implemented functionality added that are hardcoded to pollute your UI.. Do better!
This feature has been requested in 2013, has 250+ votes and still not even assigned, let alone implemented in 2024. Seriously @atlassian?
I would really benefit from this issue being addressed, for meeting notes especially
Happy Birthday CONFSERVER-31358 (10 years old yesterday)!
Please implement a fix (the best solution imho, this shouldn't be so hard) or simply put this ticket in the state "Won't Do".
Dear @Atlassian,
I am slightly worried that this issue is unassigned. I am afraid it is being overlooked, as it seems a low hanging fruit function to me. Is there anybody listening or watching at all?
(As a side note, at our corp we require all issues to be always assigned to someone. By default to the product owner or project lead.)
We (I think that I am not alone...) would greatly appreciate this feature. Why does it take so long?
Echoing the question posed by several others in this thread - why is this not already present? This will complicate getting people to accept Confluence as a source of meeting notes.
I am both astounded and disappointed that such trivial and much desired functionality takes sooo long to develop.
@b1db76113610, you can use the "page-tree.partial-loading-batch-size" system property to increase the number of pages shown, or use "page-tree.partial-loading.disable=true" to always show all pages (see https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/recognized-system-properties-190430.html for instructions). This won't solve the reverse sorting issue of course, but at least will save your team from having to click on "Show all pages" every time.
I am using this for a large enterprise, and as soon as you have a project that is going past a few months with a big team, this lack of reverse-sort on the meeting notes becomes untenable. Our team is stuck scrolling, clicking "Show all pages", and then scrolling some more. Please address soon!
Unbelievable that such basic feature is not available and issue is still open after 9 years...
Just spent like 3 hours to figure out, what is wrong with clients Confluence, that only A-Z do appear but not Z-A.
This is sooo frustrating.
I agree. There should be an option to sort pages Z to A / reverse chronological order.
Very interested in this, too. In my use case, I display child pages in the sidebar for a space. The child pages are for meeting agendas and meeting minutes, which are sorted in alphabetical order. As the page names include the date and the meeting name, that means they all sort by date, with the older stuff at the top (we have been using Confluence in production for less than one year) and the newer stuff at the bottom. As I would like to encourage users to use the space to find content passively, it is unintuitive that they have to drill down in the list of child pages to find the newest content, their entry to the pages is via hyperlinks I send them.
I would think the default option would be reverse chronological order, so it's confusing that's not an option at all.
Atlassian, if you build this feature, options to sort by Z to A, chronological order and reverse chronological order would be good – with options to use either the create date or the modified date.
Thanks.
Adding a +1, as in addition to votes comments also count towards being considered by Atlassian
I agree that if you implement sorting it is technically trivial do to both ascending and descending.
And the mentioned use case of sorting dates and wanting to have the newest on top is certainly a common requirement.
I wondered "how many votes will count" and tried to look.
Check the current top voted issue, guys: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFSERVER-23015
See its votes? its creation date?
I'm speechless. Won't be waiting for this sorting feature any more.
I did same work around, @AndiY. Luckily we have it
But work around is never a solution, a feature will be really appreciated, dear @Atlassian brains!
we would also like to have this. i'm really disappointed that a company like Atlassian with such a big, great product like Confluence does not have this implanted by default.
as mentioned before - a no brainer.
i really wonder that there is not more request for such a basic, essential functionality.
hopefully this will be implemented soon.
as a workaround we are currently using a page-tree-macro on the parent page. here the sorting is available.
thanks
seems a no brainer, reversing order of meeting notes with dates in the title gives us a lot less to scroll...
Our team needs this feature.
It will automatically show latest log summary at top.
And for another Macro 'Child Tabs', it will automatically activate the first child of selected page.
We'd like it to always activate and display the latest one when newly added.
So we'd like this Z->A sort feature.
Thank you for your time.
I don't understand this at all.
From developer point of view, it should be an easy task. So it has to be a political, strategic or design decision to not implement this.
Maybe @Atlassian can help us what's behind?
Having this feature will reduce the need for me to sort my pages every week. 2 mins saved/ week so 104 minutes per year roughly.
@jm.cao thx got it to work
Its a bit sad that there is no implemented solution,
even when a coded and working workaround is already present.
Same "shocked and surprised" as you, Vien Phan
How many more votes Atlassian needs to handle this issue???
5 years!!!!
No greetings anymore
Christiane
I'm really surprised knowing that this issue stay unresolved for so long time since its creation.
Voted for super helpful function.
The reverse alphabetical sort would be really helpful. Especially for Meeting Notes
I agree to Mrs Klinkenberg that this workaround is nothing you can do for a big company with hundreds of Spaces.
Voted for this issue.
Hello @jm.cao,
this does only work if you are a Admin, and this will not do in a big company, adding some stylesheets to ALL spaces. Even if this is only one single setting. With a new release, all of thoise settings must be checked whether they still work or not.
MUCH BETTER WOULD BE IF ATLASSIAN WOULD RESOLVE THE PROBLEM ITSELF, really awkward, that this cannot be done within 6 years of investigations!!!!!!!!
Greetings Christiane
Hello! You need to be an administrator. The version doesn't matter, mine is 5.10.8 but my dev enviroment is 6.8.2 and the option is there too, look:
I found this too:
Note: By default, only system administrators can edit the CSS for a space or for the site. To allow any user with Space Admin permissions to edit the CSS for a space, go to > General Configuration > Security Configuration and select Custom Stylesheets for Spaces.
Hope it helps!
Hi jm.cao ,
this sounds great, but I cannot follow your explanaition
1) which version of Confluence do you use?
2) which -> Stylesheet do you mean. I can only see the "PDF stylesheet", which you do not mean, I suppose?
This is what I see:
Thanks for explaining a bit more.
Greetings Christiane Klinkenberg
Hi! I found a solution. You just have to inspect the parent element you want to reverse order and save the id of the ul element. For example: child_ul9699828-0
Then you go to space tools -> look and feel -> Stylesheet
There, you have to edit and paste the following:
ul#child_ul9699828-0
{ display:flex; flex-direction:column-reverse; }
And voilà!
It would be very useful to have this work on the sidebar page tree.
I am wondering what our customer would say if they asked for a feature for years and getting NO answer at all.
So, what news about this feature???
This would be a very useful feature. Is commenting here the best mechanism for 'up-voting' this?
I'm also wondering whether there are any news ?
Greetings Christiane
Some of our pages have a date in the title.
Currently it's not possible to see the latest pages on the top.
This is a simple improvement that we would like to see too and our use case is the same. Right now, users are manually resorting meeting notes to have the latest notes appear at the top. The ability to reverse the sort order in the Re-order pages view would solve the problem.
I was looking for this feature and came across this issue - definitely worth implementing!
Same issue for me, with meeting notes. They are named like this: "2014-10-07 FooBar Meeting Notes", so in alphabetical order the most recent ones currently show up at the bottom. I'd like reverse-alphabetical order to be available so that the most recent meetings show up on top of the list.
I'm using 5.5.4-m2 Confluence version and would also like to sort the pages in order of creation.
The problem I'm facing is that I'm creating several meetings, and would like the most recent first.
EX:
Meetings Strategic Consulting
03/02/2014 - 1st Meeting Management Consulting Team
17/02/2014 - 2nd Meeting Management Consulting Team
03/10/2014 - 3rd Meeting Management Consulting Team
I wish it were
Meetings Strategic Consulting
03/02/2014 - 3rd Meeting Management Consulting Team
17/02/2014 - 2nd Meeting Management Consulting Team
03/10/2014 - 1st Meeting Management Consulting Team
Additional sort options (beyond manual sort and alphabetical) which would be useful within a Confluence hierarchy might be:
- Reverse Alphabetical
- Creation Date
- Reverse Creation Date
- Last Edited Date
- Reverse Last Edited Date
I, too, create daily meeting notes and daily checklists tracked through Confluence. After awhile, I need to "archive" them into a different space in the hierarchy for ease of access to the newest notes and checklists. The process is a little unwieldy and it breaks up the continuity of these items which I'd prefer to keep together.
Can't even imagine starting a space for meeting with a page for each meeting and not being able to sort newest to the top. This is a no brainer!
This is a stupid simple thing and very needed for notes and date value sorting.
