Icons on Confluence Top Navigation Bar Rendered as Letters in Internet Explorer & Firefox

      Steps to Reproduce

      • Launch Internet Explorer
      • Navigate to Internet Options >> Security
      • Do the following for all zones:
        1. Click Custom Level...
        2. In the resulting Security Settings prompt, look for the Downloads section, and set Font download to Disable
        3. Click OK and then Apply (remember to repeat these 3 steps for all zones)
      • Restart the OS
      • Navigate to Confluence after the restart, and notice that the Confluence Top Nav Bar now looks like this:

The issue is also affecting FF browser

      Workaround for IE:

      • In Internet Explorer, navigate to Tools >> Internet Options >> Security
      • Do the following for all zones:
        1. Click Custom level...
        2. In the resulting Security Settings prompt, look for the Downloads section, and set Font download to Enable.
        3. Click OK and then Apply (remember to repeat these 3 steps for all zones)
      • If this does not work, then there could be other reasons causing this. Best would be to try to download the font pack manually via: http://<yourConfluenceURL>/s/en_GB-1988229788/4226/d7686547091e645d7b0285207c0b86be721c74eb.1/5.0/_/download/resources/com.atlassian.auiplugin:aui-experimental-iconfont/atlassian-icons.ttf to see if indeed, Confluence is serving that font pack correctly.
      • Customers running Confluence in SSL will need to add the following to <CONFLUENCE_INSTALLATION>/conf/server.xml (within the <Context ... /> element):
        <Valve className="org.apache.catalina.authenticator.NonLoginAuthenticator"
               disableProxyCaching="true" securePagesWithPragma="false" />

After that, restart Confluence. Thanks to kevin.hughes for this suggestion

      Workaround for FF:

      • Type about:config in FF URL bar
      • Search for "browser.display.use_document_fonts". The value is set to 0
      • Reset it to the default value 1 to fix the problem

Same problem up to version 6.7.1.

what about those of us behind firewalls with NO internet access

A valid question that couldn't be answered for 3 years.

Let's hope Atlassian reverse their nonsense decision to switch to downloadable fonts.

Our organisation (a bank) has font downloading disabled by our security czars, so have to craft jQuery patches to replace the (otherwise invisible) "icons" with (roughly) look-alike characters from the standard set of fonts.

            Hello there,

We are having this issue in one of our production instances (wikis.cern.ch). I have realized that for this site three different font files are been downloaded when you request it via Internet Explorer:

            1. https://wikis.cern.ch/s/en_GB-1988229788/4394/a32f094df7825f58c6a417309475c6c954804a27.45/5.0/_/download/resources/com.atlassian.auiplugin:aui-experimental-iconfont/atlassian-icons.eot?#iefix
            2. https://wikis.cern.ch/s/en_GB-1988229788/4394/a32f094df7825f58c6a417309475c6c954804a27.45/5.0/_/download/resources/com.atlassian.auiplugin:aui-experimental-iconfont/atlassian-icons.woff
            3. https://wikis.cern.ch/s/en_GB-1988229788/4394/a32f094df7825f58c6a417309475c6c954804a27.45/5.0/_/download/resources/com.atlassian.auiplugin:aui-experimental-iconfont/atlassian-icons.ttf

If you ask for the same site via Firefox or Chrome you only get the atlassian-icons.woff one.

I have installed a fresh instance from scratch and from IE I only get the atlassian-icons.eot?#iefix one.

This behaviour makes me think that maybe different font resources could be loaded from different plugins causing the issue...

            Any thoughts on this?

            Thanks in advance,

            Luis

I'm having a similar issue with IE rendering the images in the top bar of Confluence, but instead of letters, I'm not seeing anything. The button is there to click on for the menus, but the graphics are not. This issue occurs with IE 9 and IE 11. SSL is enabled in Confluence's Tomcat instance. The issue does not occur with standard, insecure http.

Reverse proxy is also one of the contributing factors towards this issue. For users who are still affected by the case and Confluence is configured with reverse proxy, try to bypass this and check again.

I had the same issue with Firefox: The about:config setting "browser.display.use_document_fonts" was set to 0, whyever.
Resetting it to the default value 1 fixed the problem,

We reverted the live server back to http and the problem went away. Moving back to https and the problem reappears

I can confirma AGAIN that the workaround does not work around the problem in our case (many users are stuck on IE and are not likely to move)

Is this going to be fixed????
