Copying and pasting a link to a Confluence page results in a web URL link instead of a space/page link

NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding bug report.

      Symptoms

When you copy a link to a Confluence page, as per our instructions here, the link is created as a web URL link, rather than a normal space/page link. The result of this is:

      1. If you go to the linked page's info, that link is not listed as incoming
      2. If the page linked is ever renamed, then that link will not be automatically changed to the new location

This also happens if you are copying and pasting images that are stored as attachments in Confluence. In our documentation, it's mentioned that you can drag and drop images into the editor, which is the same as copy and paste.

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Follow the steps here to copy and paste a link into a page
      2. Click on the link, and then click Edit, to find that it's a web URL link

      Workaround

Instead of copying and pasting the link, create the link manually.

This is still a problem even in 5.xx, just migrated servers and we have thousands of broken links. Enforcing a rule of "do this rather than what appears to do the exact same thing" with the users is not an option in the real world.

I think there's some confusion here (and possibly in the documentation) over copying links versus copying urls. This is complicated by browsers providing multiple options to copy links and to copy urls.

If you copy and paste the URL of a Confluence page then it will convert into a nice "internal" link. If you copy a whole link, that is text and url and all, then it will be a web link as described in this bug. I don't believe it has ever worked differently, but I could be mistaken.

Actually, I think another workaround is to place the source page (ie, the original page with the link you want to copy) in Edit mode, then copy the link. When you paste the link in a new page, it seems to maintain the reference to the original destination without converting the link to a web URL link.
