    • We collect Confluence feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

Currently, in order to create a Space Template, a user needs to a Space Administrator. I'd like to be able to allow users to create templates for their spaces without the other privileges that come with being an Admin.

I see 2 main options, either of which would be acceptable:

      • Create a new permission, allowing users/groups to create Space Templates.
      • Simply allowing any user with Add Page permissions to Create Templates as well. (you could make this configurable, to allow users to retain the current way as well)

      I found issue CONF-3021, but it's 7+ years old.

            Hi everyone!

My name is Charlie and I work in Confluence Data Center.

We are looking to chat with customers who regularly use Confluence Data Center or Server in a non-admin capacity (creating or reviewing pages and blogs etc.) to meet with us 1:1 for one hour to help inform our upcoming product roadmap.

We will be running these sessions in June 2023. If any of your team or colleagues are interested in participating, please reach out to confluence-research@atlassian.com.

If we are going for workarounds, I can also suggest this little nugget:

If you go into the source editor, you can use  <ac:placeholder> </ac:placeholder> to add placeholder text to a non-templated page.

(If anyone knows how to turn this knowledge into a user macro that places code in the source editor, that could also come in clutch.)

Thank you.  Mission accomplished - we now have a workaround that can be implemented for this issue.  Very grateful as I am sure many others are as well.

This is spamming the 144 watchers each time...

To add a workaround solution for anyone interested:

Scriptrunner includes the Create Page macro that is a more flexible version of the create from template macro. It allows to create pages based on other pages --> You can simple create a "page templates" section in your space and place regular pages in it that should be used as templates. Grant selective edit permissions to the subpages without the need to be space admin.

Then replace the create from template macros with the scriptrunner variant and tell it to use the pages in your template section as the template. This has the added advantage that we have full version history of the template pages and can apply approval processes (e.g., with comala workflows) to the template pages. The only drawbacks are that the title bar "... create from template" button does not show them and that instructional text cannot be added to the "now-regular-pages templates".

This would make Confluence much more user friendly for my team. We all contribute to documentation on a repeated basis, and manually recreating the same format is tiresome and leads to inconsistencies between authors. We should be able to create and edit templates without needing to be a space admin.

We'd like this feature as well. Our Confluence space is used by multiple roles - BA, designer, developer and testers. Each role wants to create some templates, which may evolve with time. Ideally we want someone to create the initial template for their role, and then other people with the same role can edit that template if they need. When only the admin user can edit the template, people are less motivated to let the admin know that a small change is needed. Instead they will just manually make that change every time they use that template, which totally defeats the purpose of a template.

The addition of this feature would be an excellent enhancement. Right now I consistently need to create documents that comply to a template that I cannot create for my team confluence space. To circumvent this I am constantly copying existing documents to create new ones. It doesn't make sense that I should need admin privileges to create a simple reusable template.

Security concern. We are obliged to give admin rights, which is not ok. very depressing that each important feature is open for many years.

This really needs to be implemented going on the principle of least access you should be able to apply the template permissions without giving a user full admin access. This is a security concern as they will then be allowed to modify the permissions of other users and could potentially cause issues with the system intentionally or unintentionally.

This is coming on 9 years that this has been open.  Why can't we get an update to state that yes this will done in such and such a release or that they is no intention of ever providing this functionality?  As the previous poster has pointed out. this is an obvious requirement to secure our servers.
