I am trying to login to confluence.atlassian.com to update my user group page and I am stuck in a captcha validation loop. Every time i enter the word I keep getting asked to do another and another and another and so on.

[CONFSERVER-20530] Stuck on a captcha loop when logging in

In the case of an expired password, the user has no way to enter a correct one. Is there a reason Confluence doesn't simply tell the user that his/her password is expired, rather than continue to serve up the endless captcha loop?

I just had a user experience this captcha loop, and in our case, we DID notice the password wasn't being retained, but even with all fields filled in, we were constantly getting the captcha page. Of course, it looks like a captcha loop, if you keep entering the wrong password again and again. So if you're an admin, and someone complains about a captcha loop, just reset their password, they've obviously forgotten it. Also, based on previous commenter, I tested it , and the password field isn't repopulated even if you enter the correct password (and a wrong captcha).

I see this is resolved, but we are experiencing a similar issue. The reason users seem to be thinking they've gotten stuck in a captcha loop on login is because the captcha prompt screen does not retain the password entry on subsequent requests, that is, if I mis-enter the captcha, the password field needs also to be re-entered.

I'm not sure this is a bug - maybe it's a security feature, but it has caused a lot of confusion for our users. I can certainly see why you wouldn't want to retain the password value if the password is wrong.

I clicked on forgot your password, received the new password, and attempted to login with the username in the new password email and the new password. It worked the 2nd time I tried. I guess for now we are good Thanks.

I will verify again today. I had tried an alternate password and got a different error message (that the username or password was invalid) rather than being stuck in a captcha loop.

            Hi Julia,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. It sounds like you may be having some problems with your user account on CAC; I have just tested the CAPTCHA system and it worked fine for me. Have you tried using the "Forgot your password" feature?

I have flagged this issue as a support request so that someone can assist you further if you require.
