Host WebDAV launcher add-on for Firefox at Mozilla and provide information for people wanting to install it

    • We collect Confluence feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

People who use the Office Connector with Firefox need to install a Firefox add-on called the "WebDAV Launcher" if they want to edit Office documents from Confluence. See our docs:
      http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Installing+the+Firefox+Add-On+for+the+Office+Connector

At the moment, we do not give any information about the add-on, such as license information, versions, update history, author information, etc. This is problematic for people who need to supply such information to comply with corporate policy before they can install the add-on.

Solution as discussed with Ryan on Friday 16 July:

      • Host the WebDAV Launcher add-on at Mozilla.
      • Rename the WebDAV Launcher to include the name "Atlassian" in the title: "Atlassian WebDAV Launcher".
      • Change the "Home Page" link in the add-on metadata. At the moment, it points to "www.atlassian.com". Instead, it should point to this doc page:
        http://confluence.atlassian.com/x/A4kpCg

In addition, the tech writing team will change the above page as follows:

      • Short-term: Add at least the following version and authorship information to the above doc page:

        Latest version: 1.0.4
Compatible with: All versions of Firefox, up to and including 3.6.6
        Author: Atlassian Pty Ltd

      • As soon as the add-on is hosted at Firefox: Replace the above short-term wording with a link to the add-on's page at Mozilla.

            Hi Kevin,

I think you may be experiencing an issue that I saw recently. I've just reported it as CONF-22933. Let me know if the workaround works for you

            Cheers,
            Niraj.

We have recently installed Confluence 3.4. I have installed the webdav-launcher 1.0.5 as suggested and set the options so it finds Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. In Firefox 5.0 when I use the

            {viewxls}

macro on a page, an attached xls file will appear with a 'Edit document' button beside it no problem. However, I cannot edit the excel spreadsheet directly from the page the viewxls macro is on.
I can go to the attachments page and download and edit it from the "Edit in Office" link. But the Edit document button that appears on the rendered page will not launch Excel. If I do use "Edit in Office", it creates a copy on my drive, but the file will be renamed so it does not overwrite a previous version. When I go to upload it, I have to manually remove the previous version from the attachments page first (I do not want the older versions attached).

If I use IE I have no problem, the file is saved automatically, the Excel spreadsheet is launched and when I save in Excel, the updated file is sent to Confluence as expected.

            Any suggestions?

I just upgraded to FF5 and the plugin does not seem to work.
When I want to edit a docx document nothing happens. I double-checked that I have the correct extensions set up and I did. Same
            settings that worked for FF4.

Edit: I created a new feature request: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-22757

I've updated the plugin to work with Firefox 4.0. Note that there were some breaking changes to the way plugins work in FF 4.0. Therefore, this upgrade is not backwards compatible. This shouldn't be a problem since the only change is making it work in 4.0.

I've also moved the hosting to Mozilla's website. The plugin is currently being reviewed by mozilla. You can download it directly from here

"Firefox 4.0 has launched" - based on previous history (9 mnths since hosting the extension at Mozilla was mooted) and the still missing support for Office 2010, I'd suggest you check back in about 12 months...

Not sure if this should be a separate issue, but when will the WebDAV Launcher support Firefox 4.0? I know they are still in beta at the moment, but a majority of the plugins I'm using do support 4.0. Hopefully it will not be difficult to update your plugin to support 4.0.

Short-term doc updates done. We'll need to update the docs again once the add-on is hosted at Mozilla: Remove the version-specific information and add a link to the Mozilla add-on page.
