Images in Word export pages do not show up because of login requirement

NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Cloud. Using Confluence Server? See the corresponding bug report.

Due to some attachment changes made for 2.2, images on a page exported to Word (in a private space) do not show up. This is because Confluence will now require "Word" to login to view those attachments (when a previous security hole allowed it) accessed through the direct URL, and so the image does not appear.

e.g. the following IMG tag embedded in the exported Word (HTML) document links directly to an attachment. Attempting to access this (with the domain pre-pended) will result in the login screen appearing.

      <img src="/download/attachments/764/PerspectiveRelationships.png" border="0" />

      Workarounds:
Office Connector (for 3.5.x and previous versions only)
The Office Connector for Confluence does not have this problem. Instead of selecting Tools > Export to Word, you select Tools > Edit in Word . This will open up the Confluence page in Word, including any images. You can then do whatever you like with the file on your local machine and save changes back to the server if needed.

      2. Set A Cookie
Simply login to Confluence using Internet Explorer and tick "Remember my login on this computer". So long as this cookie is maintained by Internet Explorer (i.e. until you wipe your cookies or click log out), you will be able to successfully view all images when viewing your document in Word. Note that this will be remain effective after you close IE although it will need to be performed after a restart of the server.

Edit: Set A Cookie work around does not work. Please use Office Connector instead.

Hi @Nirav Patel, how can you export at least 50 images? I can't get confluence to export even 1

Diego Alexander Vargas Atara added a comment - Hi @Nirav Patel, how can you export at least 50 images? I can't get confluence to export even 1

I am Confluence Cloud and have just faced this issue of word export ignoring all images after first 50.

Writing a user manual and among other bugs I have found, this is the worst one so far. Have more than 50 images and when exporting to Word, first 50 shows up. Rest are missing.

Is there a config that I can use to change this setting?

I genuinely can't believe the Atlassian mindset here! Bugs are just left open for years without fixes!!!

This issue is affecting us as well. The first 50 images were fine. After that images fail with a random image or two displaying as expected.

Given this bug and the PDF left align bug, we are unable to successfully export content as expected.

We are affected as well. The first 50 images (around 50kb in size each) are loaded into the exported Word document, all images after fail. The 31 page document we exported has images on the first 25 pages, last pages the images are not loaded.

The issue is not present when exporting to PDF, or when using the (paid) plugin Scroll Word Exporter for Confluence.

I'm having the same issue Rosalind described above – suspect it is not login related, since the first 30+ images were fine.

pschlesinger: you're welcome. I just activated the issue tracker, so you should be able to use it w/o registering. Commenting requires registration on Bitbucket, which is free. I then need to add you as a reviewer. You can then comment on files in commits (don't click on source code - a comment is attached to a file of a specific commit).

Hi dgehriger!  Looks cool. Thank you for doing this.  Reading through your source code.  I have some comments, questions, and suggestions.  I'm experienced in GitHub but not BitBucket.  How do I annotate your code in BitBucket?  I'm hoping I don't have to pay for an account...

I wrote a Python script which lets you select a Word file exported from Confluence Server and possibly also Cloud (not tested - please report if it also works for Cloud) and then adds any missing images in that file after retrieving them from Confluence.

            • A single executable (Windows) of that file is available at Bitbucket.

I have images missing from page 1 – specifically for when I have JIRA JQL queries many of the icons for issue types don't make it over.

In addition, the priority icons are massively enlarged – something like 4x the size of the issue query icons that make it into the PDF.

How difficult can this be to do?  There are lots of open-source libraries on the Internet that export to Word.

            +1

When I export a long Confluence page to Word, all works fine at the beginning of the file (images on a Confluence page and included from other Confluence pages). After a certain number of pages (around page 17/18) the images stop exporting... it is really infuriating!

Am I reading correctly that the workaround is only for older versions?

+1 also experiencing this issue. For us it is exporting 15% of the images to the Word doc but the remaining 85% are not displaying.

I'd like to add my voice to the clamour for this issue to be resolved. It really skewers our case to management that Confluence can replace Word for our internal documentation and user guides if this issue is still prevalent after so many years!

Can you please fix this issue? At the Atlassian Roadshow you were boasting about the collaboration possibilities of Confluence as opposed to Word and it's 'track changes' feature. But if we cannot export to Word including images (we need this to respond to a client RFP), all these collab features are useless.

I'm having this issue as well. I see the framework for the images, but they aren't showing up. Very frustrating.

There are over a dozen issues reported to you from different users relating to this issue. Originally reported in 2012, i believe it is time this issue is resolved.

What is worse is that many of the issues reported relating to that have been flagged as resolved !!!

The main problem remains in not getting images to show in the exported word documents and this is terrible especially when we need to share documentation with clients who require portable soft copies or even hard copies in our own documentation format !

You have already found the main cause of the problem, we request you give us a timeline for resolving this issue as it has been on backlog since version 2.2 !!!

            Hi nicholas.tsiroyiannis

Thanks for getting in touch. This issue isn't on our immediate backlog. There are a number of more critical issues that we need to address before looking into issues such as this. As this issue does have a big impact on the functionality of the office connector I would expect that we'd start looking into this soon. Unfortunately I cannot give you a precise timeframe.

            Dear Oli,

This is a severe limitation. The office connector does not work for mac users. This renders the current workarround unusable.

Whilst we love maintaining our documentation in confluence, and its a major use case for its adoption in our organisation, not being able to take content offline is significant. We (and I'm sure many other enterprise software vendors) have to provide documentation offline as well. This is either because implementation teams need to tailor the content for a Client or because it needs to be printed hardcopy (yes, some organisations still print manuals!!!).

I would appreciate some feedback to your product board and to us in terms of where in your roadmap will you be addressing this,

            With thanks and regards
